The Jezerska Kočna (German Seeländer Kotschna , often short Kočna for the whole massif) is a 2540  m high mountain in the Steiner Alps in Slovenia .

Location and surroundings

Jezerska Kočna is located east of the Kokra valley about one kilometer west of the 2558  m high Grintovec , the highest mountain in the Steiner Alps. Upstream of Jezerska Kočna to the southwest are the 2520  m high Kokrska Kočna and Na Križu ( 2475  m ).

The closest village is Zgornje Jezersko ( 897  m ) in the north of the mountain. The Čedca waterfall lies on the north side of the Kočna . At 138 meters, it was one of the highest falls in Slovenia until it was largely destroyed in a rock fall in 2008.

Alpinism

The bases for climbing the mountain are the refuges Češka Koča na Spodnjih Ravneh ( 1542  m ) in the northeast and Cojzova koča ( 1793  m ) in the southeast. The Bivak v Kočni bivouac box with eight beds is located south of the summit at 1952  m .

The normal route leads from Cojzova koča to the summit, with two variants available in the upper area (via Kokrska Kočna or from the east via Dolska Skrbina ). The north-facing Kremžar route from Češka Koča is also a popular ascent. All of these paths are at least partially insured as via ferrata .

Despite its high rock faces, Jezerska Kočna is not a popular climbing mountain because of its fragile rock . About the northwest ridge leads a route in difficulty III (UIAA) to the summit, the rocky summit Oltarji the northwest ridge, there are still some difficult shorter routes. A rather insignificant route with difficulty level II leads over the southwest ridge. There are about ten waterfalls, especially on the north side of the mountain, which are used for ice climbing in winter . The Čedca Fall, which was once considered the most important icefall in the massif, is hardly accessible today.

In winter, Jezerska Kočna can be climbed on both the east and north sides as well as a ski tour . However, all ski climbs are considered challenging.
