The earliest finds from today's municipal area date from the Neolithic Age: a hatchet near Unter-Kulm, a serpentine stone ax from Reidenau and especially ceramics in St. Leonhard, Feistritz, Beißendorf and Glantschach.
In ancient times there was a sanctuary of the Noreia on the castle hill of Hohenstein .
The church in Glantschach was first mentioned in a document in 958/991, and Liebenfels Castle in 1333. In the early modern period, the area was characterized by scythes and hammer mills .
On January 1, 1958, the Liebenfels community was created from the amalgamation of the Hardegg , Liemberg and Pulst communities . In 1973 the municipality of Sörg was incorporated.

To the east of the Liebenfels castle ruins is the Liebenfels climbing garden with 36 routes in the difficulty range 3a to 7b. A low rope course also offers the opportunity for goal-oriented team building.
