The Gradenegg castle ruins are the ruins of a hilltop castle in the municipality of Liebenfels in Carinthia ( Austria ).

The small castle complex, which is already in serious decline, is located around 300 meters above the Glantalboden on a low rocky knockback.

Building description

The core of the system is a massive Romanesque keep , around which some farm buildings from 14-15. Century group. In the west, separated from the business complex, the three-storey includes Palas on. The building, which was originally from the first phase of construction, was extensively rebuilt, expanded and provided with marble window and door frames in the 16th century. The castle is surrounded by a circular wall from the 15th century. In the northeast corner of this enclosure is a small corner tower. The castle was also accessed from the north side, where it is protected by a considerable moat .

history

The first documentary mention took place on May 27, 1192, attested by Rudlandus de Gradnich as Ministeriale of the Carinthian Duke. He belonged to the family of the Lords of Gradenegg, who, with Reinprecht von Gradenegg, showed the last representative of this family on the property in 1436.

The Carinthian historian Franz Xaver Kohla reports that Roman copper and silver coins were found near or in the castle in 1787. Old mines are also mentioned by Kohla.

The castle was badly damaged by the severe earthquake in 1796 and soon afterwards was only used as a stable and farm building. A drawing by the artist Markus Pernhart , which has now disappeared, shows that the castle still had all the roofs around 1870, but was already in the process of decay.
