Gasmai (in the 19th century also: Gassmay , Gaßmei ) is a place in Carinthia . The border between the cadastral communities Freundsam and Rasting runs through the village , which is also the boundary between the political communities Liebenfels and Sankt Urban and between the districts of St. Veit an der Glan and Feldkirchen . As a result, the place is divided into two localities: the village of Gasmai in the municipality of Liebenfels has 1 inhabitant (as of January 1st, 2020), the village of Gasmai in the municipality of St. Urban has 16 inhabitants (as of January 1st, 2020).

The village lies in the Wimitzer mountains , just over 2 kilometers east of the Simonhöhe , just north of the friend Samer moss . A cadastral municipality border runs through the place: the northwestern part of the place lies in the area of ​​the cadastral municipality Rasting, the southeastern part of the place in the area of ​​the cadastral municipality Freundsam.

History before division

The place was mentioned in 1285 as Cosomojach , which is derived from the Slovenian kosez (= Edlinger ) and the Slovenian smoj (= slash and burn). A branch church (St. Mathias) of the Gradenegg parish was located in the village from the late 16th century. The church was abandoned in 1788, designated as a church ruin in 1828 and later converted into a residential building.

In the first half of the 19th century, both the Rasting tax community and the Freundsam tax community, and thus the entire town of Gasmai, belonged to the Gradenegg tax district .

The house in the village of Gasmai, located on the territory of the cadastral community of Freundsam, came to the community of Glantschach when the local communities were founded after the revolution of 1848/49 and in 1875 to the community of Sörg . As a result of a community merger, the village has been part of the Liebenfels community since 1973.
