Walter Suppan

Walter Suppan (born February 17, 1927 in Liebenfels , † April 19, 2011 in Klagenfurt ) was an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) and union secretary. From 1966 to 1979 he was a member of the National Council .

After compulsory school, Suppan was a gendarmerie officer from 1946 to 1962 and then from 1962 worked as the state secretary of the union of public servants in Carinthia. Between 1967 and 1977 he held the function of provincial chairman of the Austrian Workers' Union in Carinthia and from 1969 to 1984 he was the Chamber Councilor of the Chamber for Workers and Salaried Employees for Carinthia. There he also held the position of Vice President between 1974 and 1984. In addition, Suppan was chairman of the non-profit construction company "Kärntnerland" between 1974 and 1998 and represented the ÖVP in the National Council from November 25, 1966 to June 4, 1979.

Suppan caused a stir in 1972 when Bruno Kreisky read out a list of contractors for the construction of the UN City in Vienna. Together with his party colleague Johann Haider , Suppan shouted “All Jews!” In the plenary hall. Both were spared resigning after the ÖVP rumored that the two MPs were drunk.
