The public service union (GÖD) is the second largest union of the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions with 254,961 members (as of 2020) .
Organization and structure
The GÖD is organized hierarchically in works committees, state representations, state boards, federal representations, board of directors and the presidium . The change in the balance of power compared to the other sub-unions due to the conservative tradition of public employees in Austria, who were never involved in the labor movement on a large scale, is also reflected in the political representations in the GÖD, which have been part of the parliamentary group since the union was founded Christian trade unionist (FCG) is determined.
At the 17th GÖD federal congress, Norbert Schnedl , ÖGB vice-president and federal chairman of the Christian trade unionists (FCG), was elected GÖD chairman with an overwhelming majority. Fritz Neugebauer is honorary president.

criticism
The request of the staff representatives of the Tyrolean prison guards of the GÖD executive union for a tougher gait in prison and an end to the "cuddle" act of February 8, 2017 met with considerable criticism in the Innsbruck Prison, such as shackles or locks. Personnel representative Oliver Wille calls for police skills for prison guards and a change in the Security Police Act . He said: It cannot be that inmates who come from third countries receive treatment in Austria that they do not have in their home countries. Only someone who is social can be re-socialized and not someone who is not social. The safety of the Tyrolean population and our colleagues must be put in the foreground and not the care and this so-called cuddling. This requires prison guards to tie up prisoners, lock them up or monitor them via video. There is too much care in prison, such as German courses and social counseling. Ombudsman Gertrude Brinek met these demands with incomprehension and outrage, and she identified a need for further training in human rights education. The statement that inmates from third countries should receive worse treatment is unconstitutional and contradicts not only international conventions, but also the human rights standards applicable in Austria. There must be no discrimination among prisoners. This attitude shakes me deeply. I don't even want to think through to the end of what this union demand could mean in implementation. Such statements disqualify the efforts of many committed employees of the justice guard and destroy modern rehabilitation . Clubs and shackles are not rehabilitation measures. Demands for brutalization in the prison system are to be condemned in the strongest possible terms.
