Rudolf Sommer (politician, 1923)

Rudolf Sommer (born January 1, 1923 in Vienna ; † October 6, 2013 in Baden near Vienna) was an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ).

Life

After attending elementary school , Sommer attended a secondary school , where he graduated from high school in 1941 . Immediately afterwards he was drafted into the Wehrmacht as a soldier , in which he had to serve for four years. In 1945, Sommer was taken prisoner by the Soviets , from which he was only released two years later, in 1947.

In 1948, after returning to Austria, Sommer found work as a federal civil servant in the State Invalid Office for the federal states of Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland . It was until his retirement in 1989.

From 1973, Sommer was a member of the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions , of which he was Christian Democratic chairman from 1976 to 1989. In 1987 he was elected Vice President of the ÖGB, a position he held until 1991.

In June 1978, Sommer became a member of the Federal Council . He was a member of the Federal Council until January 1989 for almost eleven years.
