Fresco: St. Nicholas

The parish church of Gradenegg , first mentioned in a document in 1285, is dedicated to St. Nicholas . 1994–1998 the church in the municipality of Liebenfels in Carinthia was restored. The architectural decor marked 1788 was restored and the nave and tower re-covered with stone slabs.

Building

The medieval building has been redesigned several times and has a late Baroque west tower from 1788 with a pointed helmet from the second half of the 19th century. The bell was cast by Georg Fiering in 1609. The nave consists of a Romanesque nave and a retracted polygonal choir with buttresses from the first half of the 14th century. To the south of the choir is the sacristy and on the north side of the choir is a chapel extension from the 16th century. On the south wall of the nave there is a sundial with an unrecognizable coat of arms.

The church is entered through a rounded west portal. A four-bay net ridge vault from the 16th century extends over the nave on wall pillars. A round arched triumphal arch connects the nave with the choir. The one-bay choir with a 3/8 end is vaulted with groin vaults, as is the square chapel extension.

The two glass windows in the choir from 1909 show Saint Joseph with the baby Jesus and the upbringing of the young Mary. The saints Elisabeth , Hemma , Florian , Leonhard , Isidor and Theresia von Lisieux are depicted on the modern windows in the nave .

Murals

The frescoes in the choir date from the first half of the 14th century. They depict scenes from the legend of St. Nicholas, a fragment of the Man of Sorrows , John the Baptist , John the Evangelist and an unknown saint. Remains of the late romantic apse decoration with a majesty was exposed on the triumphal arch . The ceiling paintings in the nave were created in the 18th century and again show scenes from the legend of St. Nicholas.

Facility

The modern sacrament altar is made of wood. The Annunciation to Mary is depicted in relief on the tabernacle door. On the right triumphal arch wall there is a statue of Saint Nicholas from the 18th century on a console, the carved Madonna figure on the left triumphal arch wall is a copy of a Gothic statue and was made in the 20th century. The coat of arms grave plates of Franz Freiherr von Aschau (1680) and Maria Theresia Frein von Aschau / Lang (1730) are placed in the church.
