The Liemberg castle ruins are the ruins of a hilltop castle in Carinthia to the west of the village of the same name in the municipality of Liebenfels on the steep slope of the Göseberg.

The complex, which was built in the 12th century, consists mainly of a Romanesque forework - round tower about nine meters in diameter, a Gothic still well-preserved keep and the palace, which has also been structurally modified in more recent times . Due to its small size, this rather unusual castle complex is underestimated.

The outbuilding , built in rocky steps below the castle, was adapted as a chaste and was inhabited until the 20th century.

history

The area around the castle was already used in prehistoric and Roman times. The oldest documented mention of Liemberg comes from 1167 ( Wolfpertus de Liebenberch ). There are reports of damage from the Friuli earthquake in 1348 . In the 16th century the castle was given up as a residence after its owners at the time had Liemberg Castle built at the foot of the slope . Around 1688, Liemberg was described by Valvasor as the "old anjetzo gantz oede and abandoned castle just like a Thurn" .
