Parish Church Sts. Philipp and Jacob

The Roman Catholic parish church Arriach is located on a hill at the southern exit of Arriach , the capital of the municipality of the same name in Carinthia . It is dedicated to Saints Philip and James minor .

history

The first church building on this site was built around the year 1200, the earliest documented mention comes from the year 1207. Instead of this Romanesque building, a new building was erected in 1414, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1690, including the bell tower, and restored in its current form in 1694. In another earthquake in 1848, the spire broke off.

The former fortified church is essentially Gothic and was changed in the Baroque period . The clapboard building has a low, recessed choir . The massive vestibule tower on the west side had a baroque domed roof before the earthquake in 1848 , which was then replaced by a simple pressed lantern helmet. In addition to arched sound windows, there are loopholes on the tower that remind of the building's former defensive character. In the choir and on the south side there are rectangular windows in baroque style. The western pointed arch portal has a Gothic profile. The Gothic south portal has a profiled pointed arch.

The three-bay nave has a groin vault resting on pillars and was designed in the Baroque style at the end of the 17th century. At the same time, the wooden west gallery, which protrudes far into the room, was built. Wooden strips in a diamond pattern are attached to the lower ceiling. Behind a round-arched triumphal arch is the 1-bay choir with a 5/8 end and lancet vault . The uncovered date 1414 can be seen on the nave side of the triumphal arch.

The windows with slug panes and stained glass were renewed in 1914 and 1987, respectively, as the foundation inscriptions show.

Facility

The baroque high altar

Most of the furnishings date back to the time after the church was rebuilt at the end of the 17th century, including the remarkable high altar with its column architecture and blown triangular gable, which takes up the entire height of the choir. The middle picture shows the Madonna and Child, Saints Philip and Jacob, to the side the figures of two bishops.

The two side altars have fluted side columns. The left, northern side altar is a Sacred Heart altar with a Sacred Heart painting from the beginning of the 20th century. In the cartouche painting of the predella the Adoration of the Magi is shown, in the top picture of St. Martin . The altar panel of the right side altar shows St. Anna with Maria and Joachim. The legend of the birth of Mary is depicted in the background. The cartouche picture of the predella shows the emm exit, the top picture John the Baptist and the Lamb of God. In front of the left side altar is a simple Gothic baptismal font , the baroque cover of which is crowned by a " Baptism of Jesus ".

On the north wall of the nave are the console figures (early 18th century) of St. George as a dragon slayer and St. Florian , whose coat surrounds a house like a mighty blazing fire, is attached. In the choir on the north wall of St. Philip, on the south wall of the apostle Thomas.

Peter Pfinzing's bell is marked with the year 1513.
