The parish church of Afritz is consecrated to St. Nicholas and is located in the north-west of Afritz .

history

The church in Afritz was first mentioned in 1516 as a branch of Treffen . Not until 1673 was the rule of Porcia appointed a permanent chaplain for Afritz, who also had to look after the churches in Arriach and Wöllan. In 1971 the church was restored.

Building

The church is a Gothic structure that was later partially changed. The nave consists of a three-bay nave and a retracted, two-bay choir with a 5/8 end . It is supported in the south by buttresses, in the north a barrel-vaulted sacristy is added. A three-storey vestibule tower with a baroque onion helmet and lantern from 1716 adjoins it to the west. The bell was cast by Peter Pfitzing in 1506. On the south wall of the nave, remains of a Christophorus fresco from the end of the 15th century were uncovered.

The tombstone of Anna Catharina Himmelbergerin from 1682 is placed in the vestibule. The church is entered through a gothic profiled west portal. A flat, wooden field ceiling from the beginning of the 18th century spans the nave, which rests on recessed pillars with half-columns in front, which were apparently intended for a rib vault. In the west there is a three-axis organ loft, swinging far in front, with a flat ceiling above wooden columns and an ornamentally painted balustrade. A pointed arched, framed triumphal arch leads from the nave to the choir with lancet barrel vault . On the north wall of the choir is the sacristy portal with shoulder arch and coat of arms.

Murals

On the north wall of the two choir bays, the passion fresco painted around 1500 was uncovered in 1970. They show the arrest of Christ, the carrying of the cross, Mary tying the loincloth around Christ, as well as the crucifixion and angels adoring around the former sacrament house.

Facility

The baroque interior dates from 1723. The high altar with column architecture and sacrificial portals has the same height and width as the choir. The central picture, depicting Saint Nicholas, is flanked by the sculptures of the princes of the apostles Peter and Paul , the upper picture shows God the Father. An altar sheet from the end of the 16th century was added to the left side altar in 1970, it shows the Madonna and Child. On the right side altar is a statue of the Sacred Heart from 1900. Only the basket of the former pulpit has survived; today it stands on a plinth on the floor and is used as an ambo .

On the north wall of the nave hangs a late Gothic cross that originally served as a lecture cross. The Gothic console figure of St. Nicholas was made in 1508/09 by the younger Villach school. The baptismal font is marked 1681. Under the organ gallery hangs an oil painting of the Holy Family in the style of the Nazarenes , which comes from the former Koster Harbach .

In the sacristy there are two figures that were originally placed in the church of Wöllan; a statue of St. Peter from the mid-16th century and a Baroque Paul carved according to a Gothic model. An oil painting of St. Barbara from the end of the 16th century hangs in the sacristy .
