The Gailitz , in Italian Slizza ( Slovenian Ziljica , vernacular in the Gailtal Ziljíca , in the Canal Valley Ž (i) ljíca ; historically also German  Schlitza or Gailica ) is an almost 30 km long right tributary of the Gail in Italy and Austria .

Greule explains the name as a derivation from the Gail estuary with the Slavic ending -ica, which can be a diminutive or expresses a relationship and is often used for backwaters. Similarly, Heinz-Dieter Pohl interprets the name as Kleine Gail - nb there is a stream called Kleine Gail in the Pustertal .

The origin of the Gailitz, called there on the upper reaches Rio Lago or Seebach , lies in the Seebach valley below the Nevea saddle in Italy. It flows through the Raibler See ( Lago di Predil ) below the Predilpass ( 1156  m slm ). Then it flows north, past Tarvisio , where it takes in the Rio Bartolo (Bartolobach) from the Saifnitzer Sattel and the Rio Bianco (Weißenbach) from the Laghi di Fusine (Weißenfelser lakes), and reaches at Thörl-Maglern at an altitude of 600 m Austrian territory. West of Arnoldstein it flows into the Gail (548 m).

As part of the Canal Valley, the lower Gailitz valley forms an important transport link between Austria and Italy, with a secondary route over the Rateče (Ratschacher Sattel, Valico di Fusine) into the Savetal to Slovenia.

Its catchment area is 212.5 km². The Gailitz is characterized by an autumnal runoff regime . At the Thörl gauge, 7 km above the estuary, the Gailitz has an average water flow (MQ) of 7.56 m³ / s. The mean annual flood (MJHQ) is 109 m³ / s, the highest flood on October 26, 1999 was 237 m³ / s.

By the waste water from the lead smelter near Arnoldstein and Flotationsabwässer of mining in the Raibl Gailitz was deserted for decades. The water quality has improved significantly from 1987/88 onwards through wastewater treatment and the closure of the lead smelter. Today the Gailitz has a water quality of class II (little polluted). Fish have also settled again. The brown trout is predominant , in the lowest section there are also graylings and coppers .

At Arnoldstein, KELAG built the Gailitz power plant in 2010 , which replaced three smaller plants and has an output of 1.9 MW.
