Arnoldstein Cross Chapel

The Kreuzkapelle on the eastern edge of the village on the old main street of Arnoldstein in Carinthia is a three-part chapel that was built in 1529 and 1659 by abbots of the nearby Arnoldstein Abbey .

The oldest part of the chapel houses a figure carved into a rock at the Seltschacher Bach by an unknown stonemason at the beginning of the 16th century, depicting Christ crucified. Legend has it that the crucifix grew out of the stone; presumably it is a site of pagan superstition, which one wanted to "Christianize" by building a chapel. The Arnoldstein abbot Benedikt Taxer (r. 1515–1552) had this chapel built in 1529 to protect this figure on the rock and across the stream. The crucifix, marked with the year 1517, forms the altarpiece. There are frescoes on the outer wall of the arched hall, which is open on the street side . To the left of the entrance, a votive picture illustrates the reason for the construction of the chapel: a farmer kneels and thanks God for the miracle that his cattle, struck by lightning, sank to the ground in front of the cross without being damaged. In this painting you can see the farmer's horse and two oxen in front of a cart loaded with two barrels. Below an inscription explains the reason for the construction of the chapel:

“The creature falls to the ground through a glantz, but God preserves it for the farmer without harm. As a result, Abbot Benedict moves the cross, in whose honor the chapel is built on stone. It happened in 1592. "

The year is evidently a "twister of numbers", because Abbot Benedict died in 1552. The second votive picture to the right of the entrance reminds of another miracle when a count injured a fall from a horse, but survived "with good mind" . This picture is marked with the year 1539.

Above the chapel, on the rock, under Abbot Nonnosus Ritter (ruled 1654–1675), another, much larger chapel was built from 1659 onwards. The building, which was completed in 1666, can only be reached via a bridge over the mountainside. The way into the building leads through a pillared loggia and a portal with a blown triangular gable . Above the entrance you can see a picture of God the Father turning the screw of a wine press that is painfully pressed into Jesus' head. The altarpiece in the chapel shows the pain of Mary before the cross. The side walls are decorated with depictions of the legend of the finding of the cross and provided with explanations in German.

On the opposite side of the street, separated from the lower chapel by a driveway, there is another, smaller chapel ("Wegkapelle") with a late baroque image depicting Christ carrying the cross , as well as prayer benches for the faithful.
