Uggowitz railway accident

In the railway accident in Uggowitz (today: Ugovizza ) on August 14, 1918, two trains with vacationers from the front collided in the Uggowitz station . 11 people died.

Starting position

The two trains were traveling on the Rudolfsbahn . Due to a delay, their intersection was moved from Tarvis (today: Tarvisio ) to the small Uggowitz station. This was operated with manual switches that had no signal dependence . The correct position of the points was monitored by keying keys, which were required to switch the points and which then had to be presented to the dispatcher .

Train No. 918 had stopped at Uggowitz station, the dispatcher now cleared the entrance for train No. 917. The entry signal showed "Drive free". However, the entry point was set incorrectly. The key that had to be presented to the dispatcher was not used properly. This led to a head-on collision between the two locomotives . While on train 918 only the locomotive was badly damaged and he was able to continue his journey after changing the locomotive, the second and third carriages of the approaching train 917, both of an older design with a wooden structure, were pushed into one another.

consequences

11 soldiers died, six others were seriously injured and a larger number were slightly injured.
