The E.402A is an electric locomotive series of the Italian state railways Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), of which a total of 45 vehicles were built between 1994 and 1996.

history

Pre-production locomotive E.402.003 in the Milano Centrale station , 2007

After the FS had extensively tested their fully electronic chopper electric locomotives with direct current motors of the E.632 series and commissioned other series derived from them, they decided in parallel to test the three-phase current technology, which was still new at the beginning of the 1980s. In collaboration with Ansaldo Breda, they developed a new type of electric locomotive that should be able to pull heavy freight trains and reach 200 km / h. After the test vehicle E.402.000 delivered in 1985, five pre-series locomotives (E.402.001–005) were built with a design based on the E.632. After their trials, 40 series locomotives were built with a newly designed, more streamlined vehicle housing, which are numbered E.402.006 to 045.

The E.402A has a chopper to stabilize the input voltage and three-stage inverters on each bogie. The 40 vehicles are used today in regular service at the FS. Although they were also designed for heavy freight trains, all machines in the series belong to the Long-Distance Transport division and are used almost exclusively in front of passenger trains, primarily intercity trains . Several locomotives from the preliminary series E.402.001-005 have also been technically adapted to the series locomotives and are used together with them.

In order to better meet the current application profile and to eliminate problems with the inverter technology, which is now 20 years old, Trenitalia has started a far-reaching conversion program. The locomotives are converted into power cars for intercity push-pull trains. Instead of one of the two driver's cabs, a new vehicle head with a rubber bulge-wagon transition will be built, and the locomotives will also have completely new power electronics. The rebuilt locomotives were redrawn as the E.401 series.

The renovation took place from spring to autumn 2019.

Further development

The E.402B was later developed from the E.402A .
