Southern Railway to Zidani Most and Maribor

The Tarvisio – Ljubljana railway is a main line in Italy and Slovenia that is only partially in operation and was originally built and operated by the Crown Prince Rudolf Railway (Sankt Valentin – Laibach). Between Jesenice and Ljubljana it is now part of the long-distance connection from Salzburg via Villach to Ljubljana, the Tarvisio – Jesenice section has been closed, which is why it is also known as the Ljubljana – Jesenice railway line ( Slovenian Železniška proga Ljubljana - Jesenice ).

history

The railway line from Tarvisio (Tarvisio) via Jesenice (Aßling) to Ljubljana (Laibach) was opened on December 14, 1870 as part of the Austrian Crown Prince Rudolf Railway . After the connection from Villach to Tarvisio was completed in 1873 , there was a direct connection from Prague to Ljubljana, which had been connected to the capital Vienna by the southern railway since 1849 .

Since 1906 Jesenice was connected directly to Villach and Klagenfurt by the Karawanken tunnel and the Karawankenbahn .

After 1918 the section from Tarvisio to the Italian - Slovenian border fell to Italy, the section from the border via Jesenice to Ljubljana to Yugoslavia . In 1967 the Italian section of the line was closed, and two years later the section from the border to Jesenice.

Since 1992, the Jesenice – Ljubljana line has been operated by Slovenske Železnice .

Since the mid-1990s, there has been an almost continuous cycle path on parts of the former railway line in the Slovenian Sava Valley between Jesenice and Kranjska Gora.

business

The existing Jesenice – Ljubljana line is single-track and electrified with 3000 V. Together with the Karawanken tunnel in Jesenice, it represents an important connection between Austria and the Balkan countries. The route through the Karawanken tunnel is electrified with 15 kV AC voltage, so Jesenice station is a classic system-changing station with transverse separation based on the Italian model. Electric locomotives are ironed into the other power system and are either withdrawn from a shunting or the new train locomotive and pushed back under their own power system or, in the case of multi-system machines, switched over while stationary.
