Independencia (also: Colonia Independencia ) is a district in the Guairá department and a German-speaking colony in Paraguay with around 27,000 inhabitants. The area is around 180 km east of Asunción .

Independencia was founded in 1919 by winemakers from Baden . By decree, the Paraguayan government made 10,000 hectares of land available for immigrants, giving 10 hectares each to single people and 20 hectares to families. Settlers from Austria and Switzerland also came later . Viticulture used to be an important and primary economic factor in the colony. But that changed when Chilean and Argentinian wine flooded the market with better wine. In the meantime, alongside mate , cotton, sugar cane and cattle farming, this only plays a subordinate role. Tourism, especially emigration tourism, is becoming increasingly important. There are many streams and waterfalls here, including the famous Salto Suizo (Swiss waterfall). The landscape is characterized by the Cordillera del Ybytyruzú mountains , which are partly in this district. Here is also the second highest mountain in Paraguay, the Akati with a height of 600 m.

With the Centro Educativo Independencia , also known locally as the "German School", there is a private higher education institution in Independencia for around 140 pupils who can take a humanistic Abitur (Bachillerato Humanístico) at the end of their schooling .
