House of the German Wine Route

The house of the German Wine Route in the Palatinate wine-growing community of Bockenheim ( Rhineland-Palatinate ) has marked the end of the German Wine Route since 1995 . It was initially owned by the community of Grünstadt-Land, later the community of Leiningerland , and was sold to a private operator in 2019. The counterpart at the beginning of the Wine Route, 85 km away, has been the German Wine Gate in Silence since 1936 .

The house of the German Wine Route was built at 159  m above sea level. NHN between the old districts of Groß- and Kleinbockenheim , which were merged in 1956. The building spans the Weinstrasse like a bridge or gate, which in Bockenheim is identical to Bundesstrasse 271 ( Grünstadt - Monsheim ).

In the immediate vicinity there are other facilities that serve cultural and social life: Beyond the B 271 are the Bockenheimer Festplatz, the sports field and the community center "Emichsburg", which is named after the former castle of the Counts of the same name . It was located on a hill in Kleinbockenheim, and after frequent destruction only meager remains have survived.

The style of the house on the German Wine Route is based on a Roman fort , the façades are mostly made of wood, the entablature is partially exposed.

In addition to a restaurant with 120 seats, the building also offers space for various event rooms. In the tower room with a view of the surrounding vine hills and the Rhine plain from the Haardt to the Odenwald , those wishing to be married can celebrate the “Wine Road Wedding”.

The terrace belonging to the restaurant looks out over an artificially created lake to the southwest, which is modeled on a body of still water that used to exist in the community. It is about 100 m long and 50 m wide.

history

When the German Wine Route was created in 1935 during the National Socialist era and the German Wine Gate was built in Schweigen at the beginning of it in the south in 1936, a similar structure was also planned at the northern end of the Wine Route. The Second World War in particular initially prevented construction, later other priorities were applied. In the end, 60 years passed before the project was realized.

On the night of February 23-24, 2016, an ATM in an extension of the house was blown up with gas by unknown perpetrators. The explosion caused damage to and in the house that was estimated at 150,000 euros.
