The Cryosphere is a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by Copernicus Publications . It publishes under Open Access and publishes original research papers and reviews on all topics that have to do with frozen water on earth or on other planets outside of the earth. Among other things, research on ice sheets , glaciers , permafrost and snow cover of lakes, rivers and seas etc. is one of the main topics of the journal.

The impact factor in 2016 was 4.803, the five-year impact factor was 5.793. In terms of the two-year Impact Factor, the journal was therefore ranked 3rd out of 49 scientific journals in the “physical geography” category and 8th out of 188 journals in the “multidisciplinary geosciences” category.
