Penny Werthner

Penny Werthner (actually Penelope Christine Werthner, married Bales; born July 5, 1951 in Ottawa ) is a former Canadian middle and long distance runner .

At the British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1970 , she was sixth over 800 m and fifth over 1500 m . In 1971 she won bronze over 800 m at the Pan American Games in Cali .

At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, she was eliminated over 1500 m in the run. Over the same distance she was fifth at the Athletics World Cup in 1977 in Düsseldorf and won bronze at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton and at the 1979 Pan American Games in San Juan.

At the World Athletics Championships in 1980 in Sittard, she came in sixth place over 3000 m .

She was Canadian champion twice in the 800 m (1970, 1971) and 1500 m (1970, 1978).

Since 2012 she has headed the Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary .
