Ante Kostelic (* 11. August 1938 in Zagreb ) is a Croatian alpine skiing - coach and former Yugoslav versatile athlete and later Handball trainer. As a long-term carer for his children, the multiple overall Alpine World Cup winners, Olympic medalists and world champions Janica and Ivica Kostelić between 2001 and 2014, he was also the Croatian national ski coach. As a coach of the women's handball club ŽRK Osijek , he won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1982 .

biography

Born in Zagreb, Kostelić graduated from high school there and later graduated from the Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Zagreb . He played handball for several clubs (e.g. RK Polet Zagreb, RK Mladost Zagreb, RK Zagreb ) in Croatia (at that time within Yugoslavia) and for AS Cannes in France . As a player for RK Zagreb, he won the Yugoslav Cup in 1962. He also took part in competitions in swimming (as a member of the PK Mladost Zagreb swimming club), skiing and car racing .

After his resignation Kostelić became a coach. In the 1970s and 1980s he was a handball trainer for various men's and women's handball clubs: RK Ivanić Ivanić-grad, RK Medveščak Zagreb, RK Zagreb, ŽRK Osijek , RK Partizan Bjelovar , RK Trešnjevka Zagreb, RK Pelister Bitola , RK Celje and 1. HC Nuremberg . With ŽRK Osijek he triumphed in the 1982 European Cup Winners' Cup against Spartacus Budapest with a total of 54:38.

Kostelić has been working as an alpine ski trainer since the early 1990s. He first looked after young Croatian skiers in the clubs SK Medveščak Zagreb and SK Zagreb. He became known as a tough and demanding coach. At the same time, he took care of his children, Janica and Ivica, and led them to the top of the world of skiing, with both of them winning four times the overall World Cup, four times Olympic gold and six times Olympic silver. In the last few years he has been training the brothers Elias and Samuel Kolega .

Ante Kostelić has been awarded the Matija Ljubek Lifetime Achievement Prize by the Croatian Olympic Committee for his achievements . He was also honored with the Franjo Bučar State Prize for Sport . As he promoted Croatia's international reputation, he was awarded the Prince Branimir Order with Collar in 2010 . He was also voted Croatian Coach of the Year several times (2002, 2006, 2010, 2014) .
