Franjo Bučar

Franjo Bučar (born November 25, 1866 in Zagreb , † December 26, 1946 ) was a Croatian writer and sports official. He is considered the father of Olympic sports in Croatia .

Life

Franjo Bučar was born to a Slovenian father and a Croatian mother in Zagreb and was educated in Zagreb, Vienna and Stockholm . He graduated from high school in Zagreb in 1886 and graduated from the Institute of History and Geography in Zagreb before obtaining his doctorate in history in Graz in 1897 . As an author, he wrote about Protestant literature in Croatia and Scandinavian literature, among other things, and wrote manuals for many sports. Bučar was part of the Olympic movement in Croatia and has been campaigning for Croatia's Olympic independence in sport since 1896. He helped popularize many sports as well as the introduction of other sports in Croatia , including soccer , tennis , athletics , figure skating , alpine skiing , ice hockey and fencing . Furthermore, he was involved in the founding of numerous sports clubs and associations. He has received national and international awards. In 1914, Bučar was elected the first president of the Croatian Sports Federation, which he founded in 1909.

Bučar founded the Yugoslav Olympic Committee in 1919 and was its first president until 1927. He was also a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) from 1920 until his death in 1946 .

In 1991 the Franjo Bučar State Prize for Sport named after him (Croatian Državna nagrada za šport "Franjo Bučar" ), the highest state award for exceptional achievements in Croatian sport, was introduced.

In Zagreb , a private sports and language high school was named after Bučar.
