Niederorke is a small district of the municipality of Vöhl in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district , which is located directly on the Orke , immediately below its exit from Örkschen Schweiz (Waldeckische Schweiz).

history

It was first mentioned in 1587. An old trade route (Frankfurt - Hamburg) ran through the Orketal. In Niederorke there was a customs post that separated the Landgraviate of Hessen-Kassel from Hessen-Darmstadt . This fact ensured the small town appropriate prosperity at that time, as the merchants passing through were cashed in "properly". At the same time, there was a "language border" between Franconia and Saxony . This is still noticeable today in the Low German language of Niederorke, in Oberorke , only one kilometer away, they speak a completely different dialect.

At 31 December 1971 in the wake of were municipal reform in Hesse , the previously independent municipalities Niederorke, Buchenberg , Ederbringhausen , Harbshausen , Kirchlotheim , Oberorke and Schmittlotheim dissolved and merged to Hessenstein together .

On January 1, 1974, the municipality of Hessenstein was again merged by state law with Ittertal (consisting of the former municipalities of Dorfitter , Herzhausen and Thalitter ), Marienhagen , Obernburg and Vöhl to form the new large municipality of Vöhl. Local districts were established for all formerly independent communities .
