Location of Obernburg in Vöhl

Obernburg is part of the municipality of Vöhl . The place is in the northern part of the nature park Kellerwald-Edersee on the edge of the Kuhbach valley on a hill.

history

Obernburg is first mentioned in a document in 1278, the name probably comes from the former castle on the Weißenstein, which was called the "Upper Castle" and which was the first of the three Itter castles in 1058 .

The Romanesque style church was built before 1200. Pictures and carvings are worth seeing on their gallery. The entrance door and the valuable crucifix come from the Baroque sculptor Josias Wolrat Brützel from Waldeck .

Obernburg was incorporated into the municipality of Vöhl on January 1, 1974.

Dragon cave

On the edge of the village is the "Dragon Cave", which, as a local legend tells, Siegfried is said to have slain the dragon Fafnir . Therefore, the cave is also known as the "Siegfriedshöhle" among the population. A hidden passage leads from the cave to the pulpit of the church. This corridor served as an escape route in ancient times.

Lauterbach farm

A little to the east of the village is the Lauterbach manor , built as a country seat by Landgrave Georg III. from Hessen-Darmstadt .
