Muttersberg is a scattered settlement on the Madeisakopf (1,402 m) in the Lechquellen Mountains . It is located above the city of Bludenz and in the area of the municipality of Nüziders in Vorarlberg .

To the northwest and above the Muttersberg, separated by a saddle, lies the Hohe Fraßen (1,979 m), on whose western flank the Walser settlement of the Ludescherberg is also located. The walking time from Bludenz or Nüziders via Laz to the Muttersberg is around 2 to 2½ hours.

The area above the Galgentobel is also accessible by the Muttersberg cable car - it was opened on October 14, 1956. It is a popular excursion destination with a beautiful view of the entire valley basin, the Rätikon , the Silvretta and the Alpstein . In 2002 the cable car was rebuilt by the Silvretta Nova Bergbahnen . There is a large restaurant next to the mountain station.

From March 14th to 27th, 1972, one of the largest forest fires in Austria to date occurred above the Muttersberg, on the southeast slope of the Hohe Fraßens , in which around 56 hectares of protective forest were destroyed. In 2018 there was a fire in the area of the cable car route. The cause is said to have been a heated brake disc on a bicycle.

origin of the name

In the vernacular, "Muttersberg" is often used to refer to the wooded summit of the Madeisakopfes (1402 m ), as the name suggests - but actually it is a scattered settlement interspersed with wooded and pasture areas with around 15 buildings to the northwest and below the Madeisakopfes, mostly on and below the forest road to the Tiefenseesattel.

The area at an altitude of 1,300 to 1,400 meters is named after the family name "Muther" and was inhabited by Walsers as early as the 14th century . Once upon a time, the farms here were managed in three stages - until the last mountain farmer moved into the valley in 1969. This type of settlement is also called Maisäß in Vorarlberg . The Muttersberg area is still used extensively for grazing animals in the warm season.

Muttersberg Trail 1401

The Muttersberg Trail is a downhill route that is ridden with downhill bikes. The route starts on the Muttersberg, at 1,401 m above sea level, runs almost exclusively in the forest and is 4.5 km long. Numerous northshore elements, as well as some wall rides and drops, cover an altitude of 720 meters. The trail is challenging and suitable for experienced riders.
