Lithocarpus damiaoshanicus is a species of the species-rich genus Lithocarpus in the subfamily Quercoideae withinthe beech family (Fagaceae).

description

Lithocarpus damiaoshanicus grows as an evergreen tree and reaches heights of 5 to 9 meters. The bark of the fresh branches is furrowed; the cattle of the annual branches are dark gray to black; they have widely scattered tan-colored lenticels .

The leaves are thick leathery. The leaf blade is oblong; it is about 5.5 to 13 cm long and 2 to 6 cm wide; the petiole is 1.5 to 2 inches long. The leaf base is wedge-shaped; the leaf margin is imperforate and smooth. The leaf ends in a pointed sickle shape.

They are single sexed ( monoecious ). The spindle of the male inflorescences is hairy in rust color. The female inflorescences are rarely more than 10 cm long. They sit on the 4 to 8 millimeter thick spindle, which is scattered with lenticels. The fruit cup (cupula) has a diameter of about 2 to 3 cm. The seed cup almost completely encloses the acorn-shaped seed. The wall of the seed cup is 3 to 5 millimeters thick in the middle. The seed is flattened; it measures about 1.5 centimeters in diameter. The flowering period is November to December. The fruits ripen in October to December of the following year.

Distribution and location

This species is native to China . It occurs in Guangxi in dense forests at altitudes of 1500 to 1900 m.

Systematics

The description of this species was published in 1990 by the Chinese botanists Huang Chengjiu and Zhang Yongtian . However, this description violated Article 37.5 of the ICBN (1988). A valid publication by the same authors was published in 1996.
