etymology

Rhenegge originated from the term Reney. On the oldest flag of the Schützengesellschaft from 1726 you can find the name RENEY next to the Waldecker Stern. The Low German term "ney" means "new". The derivation of the name Rhenegge from the expression "Egge", a Low German term for elongated ridges or ridges, therefore seems unlikely.

Street names like “Auf dem Knappe”, “Knappstraße” probably indicate the town's mining past. The name Hübbelbicke is derived from the word Hübbel (hill) and from the Bicke, a tributary from the upper reaches of the Twiste near Berndorf . The name Triftweg is explained by the pastures that are still present today. Paths that enable livestock in particular to access and switch between individual pastures are called this. The name "Am Aulsch" refers to the Aulsch , a hill southwest of the village.

geography

location

Rhenegge is located in the Waldecker Land between Heringhausen am Diemelsee in the west and Adorf an der Rhene in the east. The three villages are connected by state road 3078. The village is located at 410 to 550  m above sea level. NN . 1,225 hectares are assigned to this district of the municipality . The settlement areas are in this area : An der Steinbreite, Düngerloh, In der Brücke, Meierhof, Nordeck (Rhenegge) .

Meierhof

Rhenegge is laid out around the central Meierhof and has continued to grow along the two arteries over the centuries. A villicus worked as the manager of the Meierhof , who cultivated the arable land with his servants, collected the taxes from the subordinate farms and passed nine tenths of the income on to the Lords of Padberg. In 1895 it was determined for the Meierhof settlement area: “4 residential buildings with 36 residents”.

Linguistic geography

A Low German dialect , more precisely a Westphalian dialect, is spoken in Rhenegge . Although it is now in Hesse , Rhenegge is just north of the Olpe-Göttingen line, which is considered the southern border of the Low German dialects.

The development of local language usage is due to the border location between Hesse and Westphalia. The Benrath Line is a historical language border between North Hessian dialects and Westphalian dialects . The region is also influenced by the Sauerland plateau . The Dat-das-Line follows a similar course in this region. Small-scale linguistic geographical boundaries for the pronunciation of vowels were proven around Benkhausen up to the 20th century.
