history

“Village square” in the center of Wega, which was created in 2006 as an outdoor project for the Bad Wildungen state horticultural show.

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1209, but is probably much older: remains of the foundation discovered during excavation work in 1968 date from around 800.

The oldest building in the village is the church's defense tower with its choir from the 13th century. The nave dates from the 15th / 16th centuries. Century.

During the Thirty Years War , the place was almost completely destroyed by Swedish troops. It is reported that of 22 farmsteads only two houses and the church were spared. The number of residents fell from around 120 to less than 40 people. Then the population rose again to over 200 in the 18th century.

In 1869 a devastating fire destroyed 22 courtyards; only 18 courtyards and the church were spared. In 1884 the railway line Wabern - Bad Wildungen was opened with Wega station. In 1909 Wega even got another train station, "Wega Mühle", with the construction of the railway line from Bad Wildungen to Korbach . The bridge over the Eder between Wega and Wellen was built in 1894/95 by the industrialist Wilhelm Garvens .

After the end of the Second World War, Wega grew to 528 inhabitants in 1949, many of whom were Catholic, due to the influx of refugees and displaced people. In 1961 the St. Boniface Church was consecrated for them . This church has since been demolished. There is now a specialist agricultural vehicle shop on the site.

On December 31, 1970, the previously independent municipality of Vega was in the course of administrative reform in Hesse on a voluntary basis in the town of Bad Wildungen incorporated .

Infrastructure and economy

Parallel to the Wabern – Bad Wildungen railway line , the B 253 runs south past Wega.

From 1939 to 1945, Henschel Flugmotorenbau GmbH (HFM) had military production facilities in Wega . In May 1950, the Correcta-Werke (Korrekta) took over and began producing foam and latex products. The production was expanded in the 1960s and reached a workforce of over 800 employees. After several changes of ownership - among other things, the Metzler foam company also produced here - production at this location was discontinued in the 1990s.
