Peace treaty of September 3, 1866
The peace treaty of September 3, 1866 was the peace treaty between Prussia and the Grand Duchy of Hesse (Hessen-Darmstadt) after the German War . The Grand Duchy of Hessen committed itself to a reparation payment of 3 million gold marks, an exchange of territory was agreed, and Hessen-Darmstadt renounced a number of sovereign rights. So Hessen-Darmstadt with its areas north of the Main had to join the North German Confederation . The treaty replaced the provisions of the Eisingen Armistice Agreement of August 1, 1866. Prussia undertook to withdraw its troops from the Grand Duchy of Hesse after receiving war indemnity.
Area swap
According to Article 14 of the Peace Treaty, the Grand Duchy of Hesse had to cede the following areas to Prussia:
- the Landgraviate of Hessen-Homburg
- the Hessian hinterland with the districts of Biedenkopf and Vöhl
- the communities of Bieber , Fellingshausen , Frankenbach , Hermannstein , Königsberg , Krumbach , Naunheim , Rodheim an der Bieber and Waldgirmes of the Gießen district
- the municipalities of Niederursel and Rödelheim in the Vilbel district
According to Article 15, Prussia surrendered former Nassau , Kurhessian and Frankfurt areas to Hessen-Darmstadt, which had been annexed by Prussia immediately after the end of the war:
- the Nassau office of Reichelsheim with the communities of Dorn-Assenheim and Reichelsheim
- the community of Harheim of the Nassau Office Höchst
- the former Kurhessische court Katzenberg with the communities Ohmes , Ruhlkirchen , Seibelsdorf and Vockenrod of the district Kirchhain
- the former Kurhessische Amt Dorheim with the communities Dorheim , Nauheim , Rödgen and Schwalheim of the district Hanau
- the former Hessian community of Massenheim in the Hanau district
- the former Hessian community of Treis on the Lumda of the Marburg district
- the Frankfurt rural communities Dortelweil and Nieder-Erlenbach
- the former Kurhessische district Rumpenheim of the district Hanau ; Rumpenheim is dealt with separately in the peace treaty, as it is the only one of the areas that was won that was not assigned to Upper Hesse - and thus the future customs union - but to the Starkenburg province .
Further regulations
The Grand Duchy recognized the regulations in the preliminary peace of Nikolsburg . Prussia was given a monopoly on telegraphs and postal services in the Grand Duchy. The Grand Duchy undertook to negotiate the conclusion of a customs union for the province of Upper Hesse and, upon successful conclusion, to forego Rhine tariffs .
