Melsunger mountain country

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Melsunger Bergland is a largely forested natural area of the Fulda-Werra-Bergland in Northern Hesse , Germany . It consists mainly of the horseshoe, which is open to the south-south-west, around the eponymous place Günsterode and extends up to 563.7  m above sea level. NN high ridge of the Günsteröder Höhe and its flattening in (south) westerly directions. The elevations of the mountainous country are mainly made of red sandstone .

Geographical location and boundaries

The Melsunger Bergland lies between the eponymous city of Melsungen (south-west), Morschen (south), Spangenberg (south-east), Hessisch Lichtenau (north-east) and Körle (north-west).

The north-west and north border is the valley of the Mülmisch , behind which the Söhre connects, the west and south borders the Bebra-Melsunger-Fulda valley with the Fulda , which clearly separates the mountain range from the Homberg highlands in the west and from the Neuenstein-Ludwigsecker mountain range in the south - both harbingers of Knüll - separates.

The Spangenberger Senke to the Stölzinger Mountains forms a not so strict dividing line in the east . In the south of this depression the Eubach flows towards the Fulda, in the north it follows the Essebach up to its confluence with the Pfieffe , the lower reaches of which flows through the mountains in an east-west direction and separates a smaller southern part around the 466.9  m high Wildsberg .

On the north-eastern slope of the Günsteröder Höhe, the mountainous region falls steeply from the Himmelsberg ( 563.7  m ) to the Hessisch-Lichtenau Basin , where the Söhre in the west and the Kaufunger Wald in the north, the Hohe Meißner in the north-east and the Stölzinger in the south-west Face mountains.

mountains

The highest elevations of the Melsunger Bergland can be found in the northeast of the Günsteröder Höhe, in the immediate vicinity of the Hessisch-Lichtenau basin . Apart from the southern part on Wildsberg , which is separated by the Pfieffe , all peaks are more or less foothills of this ridge, the exact limits of which are not specifically defined. On some maps, Günsteröder Höhe only indicates the center of gravity between Himmelsberg and Pentersrück in the northeast, on others the entire horseshoe.

The following surveys belong to the Melsunger Bergland - with heights in meters (m) above sea level:

  • Himmelsberg (563.7 m) - extreme northeast, southwest of Hessisch Lichtenau
  • Pentersrück (562.2 m) - 1.3 km south-southwest of the Himmelsberg (formerly with a lookout tower)
  • Wide mountain (533.2 m) - 1.3 km northwest of Himmelsberg
  • Finstere Höhe (503.2 m) - 3.5 km southwest of the Pentersrück, north of Spangenberg
  • Salmsbachskopf (493.2 m) - west of Günsterodes
  • Wildsberg (466.9 m) - southern part; southeast of Melsungen
  • Heiligenberg (439.0 m) - west, northeast Schwarzenberg s and west Kehrenbach s (both districts of Melsungen)

Waters

Flowing waters

Central watercourses of Melsunger Berg country is the Kehrenbach , together with the source streams (v. A. Ohebach ) rises in the "inside" of the Günsteröder height and in directions at the southwestern Fulda flows.

The lower course of the Pfieffe flows through the central south in an east-west direction and separates the southern part from the foothills of the Günsteröder Höhe.

Rivers on the western foothills of the Günsteröder Höhe flow from the left to the Mülmisch (border river to the Söhre), while the short streams on the eastern slope of the Höhe flow into the Essebach (border river to the Stölzinger Gebirge) from the right . In contrast, creeks on the north slope flow into the Losse in the Hessisch-Lichtenau basin .

Still waters

One of the still waters of the Melsunger Bergland is the Green Lake , which lies in the northwest near Ober- Empfershausen .
