The Söhre (also called Söhrewald ) is a wooded low mountain range and a sub- natural area of the Fulda-Werra-Bergland (main unit 357) in northern Hesse , Germany .
In terms of natural space , the Söhre is seen as a sub-natural space (357.70) of the sub-unit Kaufunger Wald und Söhre (357.7) according to the handbook of the natural spatial structure of Germany and includes the Hirschberg ( 643.4 m above sea level ), its highest elevation. In contrast, the Söhrewald is often only understood to mean the west and the middle of this area up to the upper reaches of the Losse , which (on the Bielstein ) is a maximum of 527.8 m high.
The Großalmeröder graben zone , which separates the Söhre to the north from the Kaufunger Wald plateau , is included in the Söhre.

Location and natural spaces
The Söhre is located at the junction of the two districts of Kassel (west) and Werra-Meißner (in the east) and stretches eastwards from a little southeast of the city of Kassel . The entire west of the Söhre ( Stiftswald Kaufungen ) belongs to the geo-nature park Frau-Holle-Land (Werratal.Meißner.Kaufunger Wald) , to the southwest the Söhre runs out in the Schwalm-Eder district .
In the eastern north, the Söhre merges into the narrow Großalmeröder rift zone , which in the extreme east follows the headwaters of the Gelster , in western directions the Wedemann and, after its confluence, the lower reaches of the Losse , into the southern Kaufunger Forest .
In the northwest and west, the mountainous region flattens into the Kassel Basin (343.3) as part of the West Hessian Depression in the Fulda valley .
In the south, the Söhre merges into the Melsunger Bergland at the valley of the Mülmisch (southwest) or the state road 3228 . This western part of the Söhre, which is bounded to the east by the upper reaches of the Losse, belongs to the above-mentioned nature park and represents the common Söhrewald - not to be confused with the municipality of Söhrewald .
East of the upper reaches of Losse and outside the natural park reaches the natural environment Söhre to Hirschberg again great heights to the southeast to the Hessian-light Auer pool and to the east on the Romme Roder hills in the purchase Unger forest from Meissner High separating Velmeder valley along the the Gelster to the north flowing Laudenbach flatten comparatively abruptly. The three last-mentioned natural areas are part of the Witzenhausen-Altmorschen valley .

geology
The wooded mountain landscape of the Söhre stands mainly on red sandstone from which individual basalt peaks such as the Hirschberg and the Bielstein (see below) protrude. The Großalmeröder Graben Zone in the north lies on a narrow shell limestone cover.
