Albslieder tunnel

The Albslieder Tunnel near Laudenbach

In the lower part of the eastern slope of the Hohekopf is the 339 m long Albslieder Tunnel or Albsliede Tunnel , 900 m southwest of Uengsterode . The tunnel bored in 1914/15 belonged to the former Gelstertalbahn and was located in its section Großalmerode - Velmeden . It is mostly in the municipality of Uengsterode and crosses under the ridge in a slight curve. After a dam broke in 1981 near Laudenbach, rail traffic on this section of the route was completely stopped and dismantled. Both portals are walled up in the lower area and the tunnel is winter quarters for bats.
