The Steinberg is about 588.75 m above sea level. NHN high mountain of the Kaufunger forest . It is located near Großalmerode in the Werra-Meißner district in North Hesse .
Do not confuse the Steinberg with the Great Steinberg ( 541.8 m ), Small Stone Mountain ( 541.9 m ) and Steinberg head (about 532 m ), which km on average 11 ( straight line ) to the northwest in the Natural Park Munden belonging Part of the Kaufungen forest.
Geography and mining
The Steinberg rises in the geo-nature park Frau-Holle-Land (Werratal.Meißner.Kaufunger Wald) and in the community-free area of the Kaufunger Wald estate ; the south and west slopes fall into the urban area of Großalmerode . Its summit is 2.2 km north of the core town of Großalmerode and 6.1 km south of the Kleinalmerode district of Witzenhausen . The Bilstein ( 641.2 m ) is located about 1 km north-northeast of the wooded basalt dome .
Directly to the west of the summit region are the Steinbergseen , two open- cast mining lakes , which have filled with water after the end of the mining and spread out below some steep rock faces; Traces of the former mining , in which lignite was also mined here and which continued into the 20th century, can also be seen elsewhere on the Steinberg.
The Nieste , a tributary of the Fulda, rises not far to the west of the Steinberg Lakes . A few hundred meters north of the Steinberg there is a refuge as well as a football , barbecue and playground .
Natural allocation
The Steinberg belongs in the natural spatial main unit group Osthessisches Bergland (No. 35), in the main unit Fulda-Werra-Bergland (357) and in the subunit Kaufunger Wald and Söhre (357.7) to the natural area Kaufunger Wald-Hochfläche (Vorderer Kaufunger Wald) (357.71 ).
Transport links and hiking
You can reach the Steinberg best of south on the between Großalmerode and Helsa -Wickenrode from the national road 451 in the farm Giesenhagen branching carbon road . It's about a 15-minute walk from the parking lot at the end of the line . If you walk north again from there, you will get to the aforementioned Bilstein with the Bilstein Tower observation tower .
