The Kleine Steinberg in the Kaufunger Forest is 541.9  m above sea level. NN high mountain in the urban area of Hann. Münden in the southern Lower Saxony district of Göttingen .

geography

location

The Kleine Steinberg is located in the northern part of the Kaufunger Forest in the south of the Münden Nature Park . It is located in the outer southern tip of the urban area of Hann. Münden , around 6.7 km south-southeast of the old town, and around 3.5 km (depending on the beeline ) northeast of Nienhagen , an eastern district of Staufenberg . To the west and north below the summit are the Steinberg lakes.

About 1 km south-south-east of its wooded hilltop is the almost equally high but more massive Große Steinberg ( 541.8  m ) and 1.4 km south-east of the Steinbergskopf (approx.  532  m ), which lies west of the border with northern Hesse . Both Steinberge (as they are called Kleiner and Großer Steinberg in the vernacular), which are located a few hundred meters west of this border as part of their summits, are not to be confused with the approximately 11 km southeast in the geo-nature park Frau-Holle-Land (Werra valley. Meißner.Kaufunger forest) near the northern Hesse Großalmerode located Steinberg (about  585  m ).

Natural allocation

The Kleine Steinberg belongs in the East Hessian Bergland and in its main unit Fulda-Werra-Bergland (No. 357) to the natural area Kaufunger Wald-Hochfläche (Vorderer Kaufunger Wald) (357.71), but with its eastern flank also to the natural area Hinterer Kaufunger Wald (357.72); the border between the two natural areas belonging to the Kaufunger Wald and Söhre (357.7) runs roughly along that to northern Hesse.

history

The Small Steinberg is a basalt cone whose rocks millions of years ago the red sandstone plate of kaufungen forest broke through. In addition to other mineral resources, lignite , which was mined alongside basalt, also survived within the hard hilltop . In particular on the Kleiner Steinberg - but also on the Steinbergskopf and partly also on the Großer Steinberg  - mining was carried out for many centuries and until 1961 , so that a spacious mining area was created.

The mining materials were transported north to Hann via the Kohlenstraße and in particular the so-called cable car lane . Münden transported. The approximately 6 km long Steinberg cable car , which was built from 1893 to 1894 and was able to transport around 30 tons of material per hour until 1931  , ran through this almost completely straight aisle . It ended near the railway bridge in Hann. Münden over the Werra valley. What remains are a few foundations hidden in the forest.

In the former headquarters of the Steinberg colliery, about 600 m southwest of the summit of the Kleiner Steinberg , the Steinberg youth forest home has been located since 1956, which is now called the Göttingen Forest Education Center - Haus Steinberg. An arboretum and a weather station were also built there. The medieval village of Steinrode has been located near the forest pedagogy center as an extracurricular learning location since 2004 . After the end of mining, several small lakes, the Steinbergseen, formed in the former open-cast mines. There are also two lakes of the same name on Steinberg .

Transport links

The Kleine Steinberg , for example, can be reached via the federal motorway 7 , which runs to the west of just under 4 km (as the crow flies), at the Hann. Münden / Lutterberg district road  222, which begins and can be reached via the side road that branches off from this before Sichelnstein and leads past the Hühnerfeld through the Kaufunger Forest. The latter meets the Kohlenstraße, which not only takes you to the Steinberge, but also to the southeast to the Naturfreundehaus Steinberg and to the northwest to the Hühnerfeldberg .
