geography

course

The Nieste rises in the north Hessian Werra-Meißner-Kreis in the Kaufunger Wald . Its source , the Rote Niestequelle , is located in the geo-nature park Frau-Holle-Land (Werratal, Meissner , Kaufunger Wald) on the Steinberg ( 588.75  m above sea  level ) 150 m west of the western of the two Steinberg lakes, former lignite opencast mines , 2.2 km north-north-west of the Großalmerode, which is located away from the Nieste, and 8.3 km south-east of the municipality of Nieste located on it . It is located at an altitude of about 538  m .

The Nieste, known as the Rote Nieste in the upper course near the source , initially flows in a north-westerly direction in the Kaufunger Wald. After around 1000 m of flow, a short stream flows into it, which rises around 340 m north of the Nieste spring, and shortly afterwards the short stream from the Spießborn. A little further down, the Schwarzbach and the Nieste drought flow into it. Immediately afterwards, the river reaches the eastern tip of the Kassel district, in which the municipality of Nieste is located. In this area, it extends further to the right-side opening of the Wenge stream that of the east-northeast located pass Umschwang comes.

In the upper Niestetal with the nature reserve Upper Niestetal there are extensive wells and collecting lines of the municipal works of Kassel ; Part of the Kassel drinking water is obtained here. Due to the withdrawal of water, it can happen that this section of the stream falls dry in midsummer. In the valley area there is the “Eco Path Archeology Gläsnertal”.

From the confluence of the Wengebach, the Nieste runs approximately in a westerly direction through the narrowly incised Niestetal, in which it forms the border in sections to the Göttingen district to the north in southern Lower Saxony . In this valley it also runs on the border of the geo-nature park Frau-Holle-Land in the south and the nature park Münden in the north. It flows through the Hessian municipality of Nieste and passes two parts of the municipality of Staufenberg in Lower Saxony, Dahlheim and Uschlag . Then it runs in the Hessian district of Kassel in the geo-nature park Frau-Holle-Land through the Niestetal part of the municipality Heiligenrode , after which it leaves the geo-nature park when crossing under the federal highway 7 . There it comes close to the Kassel city limits, but then flows through Sandershausen , another part of the Niestetal municipality.

After flowing through Sandershausen , the Nieste flows into the Weser source river Fulda at a height of about 134  m , which flows at the mouth of the Niestetal on the border from Niestetal-Sandershausen to Wolfsanger / Hasenhecke , a district of the independent city of Kassel .

Natural allocation

The Nieste arises in the natural spatial main unit group Osthessisches Bergland (No. 35), in the main unit Fulda-Werra-Bergland (357) and in the subunit Kaufunger Wald and Söhre (357.7) on the Kaufunger Wald plateau (Vorderer Kaufunger Wald) (357.71 ). In this natural area it flows to the western outskirts of Nieste. There the river changes into the subunit Kasseler Becken (343.3) and before Sandershausen into the natural area Kasseler Fuldaaue (343.30); Both belong in the main unit group West Hessian Mountains (34) to the main unit West Hessian Depression (343).

Protected areas

Apart from a section close to the spring, the Nieste upper course flows to Nieste in the nature reserve (NSG) Oberes Niestetal ( CDDA no. 164886; designated 1990; 1.55  km² in size). The NSG is initially lined on both sides by the landscape protection area (LSG) Oberes Niestetal (CDDA no. 378651; 1990; 6.526 km²) and then by the LSG Weserbergland-Kaufunger Wald located to the northeast (CDDA no. 325317; 1989; 285.018 km²). Initially it is also bordered by the fauna-flora-habitat area Werra and Wehretal (FFH no. 4825-302; 244.8191 km²). Apart from a section close to the spring, the upper reaches to Nieste also flows in the FFH area Niestetal and Niestehänge (FFH no. 4724-308; 5.1088 km²). Near Nieste, parts of the FFH area Bachtäler in the Kaufunger Wald (FFH no. 4623-331; 12.9839 km²) extend, and between Nieste and Uschlag the brook runs in sections in this protected area. The mouth is in the Fuldaaue bird sanctuary near Kassel (VSG no. 4722-401; 8.2893 km²).
