history

The place was cleared as a Franconian settlement within a settlement association based on Reichenbach-Walburg on a former imperial estate , probably the Walburg royal court , in the period from the 9th to the 10th century.

Due to the first documentary mention of 1109, in which the place is still called "Rodemanerodeh", it can be concluded that the clearing was initiated by a noble landlord and that the 15 families with about 60 people lived mainly from agriculture and cattle farming. Since the number of inhabitants in 1539 was still 15 fire places, i.e. 15 families with around 60 people, it can be assumed that not much has changed in the rural village over the period of 430 years.

Over the centuries Rommerode had to suffer from the burden of the taxes to numerous landlords , including the nobility of Hundelshausen, von Berge, von Felsberg, von Bischoffshausen , the House of Hambach and the monasteries of Germerode and Kaufungen. These taxes and the sterility of the arable land led to the plight of the residents, who were forced to do all sorts of sideline jobs to secure their livelihood. So among the activities, in addition to farmers and fruit drivers, also salt drivers, salt drivers, flax weavers and Raschmacher are mentioned.

The place belonged to the Hessian office Lichtenau until 1821 and then to the district of Witzenhausen . During the French occupation, the place belonged to the canton of Lichtenau in the Kingdom of Westphalia (1807-1813).

After previous wars, which did not leave Rommerode unscathed, from the first third of the 19th century to 1866 the need for numerous salt road villages , including Rommerode , increased due to the cessation of salt production in Sooden . Bad harvests, the loss of overseas sales areas for linen weavers and Raschmakers, led not only to the revolutionary events of that time but also to numerous emigrations in Rommerode. The economic and social conditions did not improve until 1868 with the lignite mining of the Marie mine . With it, the rail connection in 1883/84 and the commissioning of factories of the "United Großalmeroder Thonwerke (VGT)" in 1897, the gradual change from a farming village to an industrial community took place.

On 1 January 1974 Rommerode was in the course of administrative reform in Hesse powerful state law in the city of Großalmerode incorporated .

Since then, some things have changed for the better in Rommerode. a. As part of the village renewal program, the renovation of the church and the oak forest settlement , a former VGT workers' settlement , awarded the Hessian Monument Protection Prize in 2007 .
