Exbergsee is the name of two neighboring lakes - Großer Exbergsee and Kleiner Exbergsee - in former lignite - opencast mines in the municipality of Großalmerode in the Werra-Meißner district of North Hesse ( Germany ).

Geographical location

The Exbergseen extend between Kaufunger Wald and Söhre in the Rommeroder Hügelland - in the Geo-Nature Park Frau-Holle-Land (Werra Valley.Meißner.Kaufunger Wald)  - between the villages of Epterode in the north-east and Rommerode in the south-west, which are part of the town of Großalmerode . They are located on the Exberg (approx.  505.5  m above sea  level ) and drain into the Werra tributary weirs . Both lakes are about 300 m apart.

Great Exbergsee

The Große Exbergsee , also called Epteroder See , is the north-northeast of the two lakes and lies between Epterode in the north-northeast and the Exberg in the south. According to various statements, it is 9.6 ha to 10 ha in size and a maximum of 31.6 m to 38 m deep. Located at 438.5  m above sea level. NN it is about 500 m long and about 230 m wide. Its circumference is about 1.3 km.

Small Exbergsee

The Kleine Exbergsee , also called Rommeroder See , is the south-south-west of both lakes and lies between Rommerode in the west and the Exberg in the east. According to various statements, it is 3 ha to 3.5 ha in size and a maximum of 14 m deep. Located at 425  m above sea level. NN it is around 200 m long and 100 m wide. Its circumference is around 500 m.

history

The Exberg lakes are located in former open-cast mines in the Hirschberg district . Lignite was mined there from 1965 to 1973 . Since it was opened in 1915, the Gelstertal Railway , which was around 25 km long and transported basalt and lignite and was also used for passenger transport, ran west past the opencast mines of the time . From 1973 it was discontinued in stages and in stages.

The state road  3225 ( Großalmerode - Rommerode ) runs west past the Exbergseen, which connects to the federal road 451 in the north of Großalmerode and  meets the district road 45 just north of Rommerode, past the Kleiner Exbergsee and to Epterode .

A little southeast of the Großer Exbergsee is the forest restaurant Exberghütte , which can be reached on hiking trails or, coming from the K 45, directly .
