The Gelster is a 17.5 km long, left or southwestern tributary of the Werra in the Werra-Meißner district in northeastern Hesse , Germany .

course

The Gelster, which is one of the largest tributaries of the Werra in Hessian territory and runs entirely in the geo-nature park Frau-Holle-Land (Werra Valley, Meissner, Kaufunger Wald) , rises on the northern slope of the Hirschberg , which is southwest of Großalmerode ( 643.4  m above sea  level ) as the highest mountain in the Kaufunger Forest . The source is located on a swampy plateau on the approximately 470 to 480  m high Pfaffenberg , a northern branch of the Hirschberg near the federal highway 451 at approximately 455  m .

The river, also known as the Schwarze Gelster in the upper reaches , initially runs a few hundred meters to the northeast and then eastwards along the B 451, partly piped and underground, through Großalmerode. After 6.2 km of flow, the Laudenbach , also known as the White Gelster and the longest tributary of the Gelster , joins a little south of the Trubenhausen district , which lies in a valley between Kaufunger Wald in the northwest and Hohem Meißner in the southeast .

After the confluence of the Laudenbach, the Gelster continues to flow along the B 451 north through Trubenhausen and Hundelshausen to Witzenhausen , where it flows into the Werra at about 134  m above sea level at the Gelsterspitze .

Name origin

The "first name" of the Black Gelsters probably originated around the middle of the 16th century when mining was being promoted on the Hirschberg, because their water turned black, among other things due to the cleaning of the machines and equipment of the colliery, as brown-black coal dust was in the process the river was flushed.

Catchment area and tributaries

The catchment area of the Gelster, which has an area of 60.642 km², is pear-shaped. It stretches between about 134  m at the mouth of the Gelster and 753.6  m in height on the Hoher Meissner.

The Gelster is fed by at least 16 streams that come from the high altitudes of the Kaufunger Wald and Hohem Meißner. Of these, the Laudenbach (White Gelster) is the longest.

The larger tributaries of the Gelster are viewed downstream with orographic allocation (l = left-hand side, r = right-hand side), water length , catchment area, headwaters and estuary with Gelster river kilometers :
