The Kassel-Steig ( trail sign KS ), a panorama trail around the Kassel basin, is a 159.7 km (according to other information 157.0 km) long circular hiking trail . It has existed in parts since autumn 2011, mainly in northern Hesse and a short stretch in southern Lower Saxony and leads around the Kassel basin . Among other things, it runs through the Hohe Habichtswald , the Kaufunger Wald , the Söhre and the Langenberge . It connects the area of ​​the independent city of Kassel with many cities and communities in the districts of Kassel and Göttingen . The path is named after the city of Kassel , with a view to the Kassel basin .

History and interesting facts

The Kassel-Steig was developed by the Hessisch-Waldeckischer Gebirgsverein Kassel e. V. (HWGV), a branch of the Hessisch-Waldeckischer Gebirgs- und Heimatverein (HWGHV). Its inauguration took place during the celebrations for the 1100th anniversary of the city of Kassel on April 14, 2013.

The trail leads through the Habichtswald , Münden and Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land (Werratal.Meißner.Kaufunger Wald), through nature reserves and landscape protection areas, many stream and river valleys, over mountains and elevations and through forests, fields and meadows . He passes many prehistoric and geological testimonies and formations. As a cultural and historical hiking trail, it runs through a grown cultural landscape with numerous sights. Many waypoints can be reached by public transport, especially since there are around 40 stops of the North Hessian Transport Association (NVV) on the way.

The path leads over the mountain ranges that frame the Kassel basin , or at least through its foothills, and through all the towns and communities on the edge of the basin. There are panoramic and far-reaching views of the Kassel basin and, among other things, the Eggegebirge , Weserbergland , Reinhardswald , Harz , Kaufunger Wald , Söhre , Hoher Meißner , Thuringian Forest , Knüll , Langenberge , Kellerwald , Waldecker Land and Rothaargebirge . Many information boards along the path provide information about the respective regions.

The sign of the Kassel-Steig consists of a white wavy line on a blue background with the white letters KS ( Kassel ) above it . Stage 1 (Herkules → Weimar; 15.0 / 14.4 km):

The Kassel-Steig begins in the area of ​​the north Hessian city of Kassel am Herkules (approx.  515  m above sea  level ), which is located in the Habichtswald Nature Park on the eastern ridge of the Hohen Habichtswald in the Wilhelmshöhe Mountain Park . From its viewing platform, the view falls into the Kassel Basin, among other things . Initially, the path that the Herkulesweg crosses at Herkules leads along with Habichtswaldsteig , Märchenlandweg and student path northwest down into the Ahna valley . From there it runs downwards along the brook to the Silbersee inn (approx.  470  m ) and then, leaving the flowing water, east and north past the Silbersee , a forest lake that emerged from basalt mining. Then, passing the former Igelsburg , it leads down into the valley (approx.  360  m ) of the Lubach tributary Kressenborn, through which it runs east of the Habichtswald district of Dörnberg ; he crosses the federal highway 251 .

From then on, the trail, passing the Hohlestein ( 476.6  m ) to the west and meeting the Märchenlandweg there , leads up to the summit plateau of the Hohen Dörnberg ( 578.7  m ), on which there is a large ring wall . Descending past the massive basalt cliffs Helfensteine ( 509.8  m ), passing the Dörnberg airfield (Dörnberg glider airfield ), he arrives at the Habichtswald nature park center ; Between the Hohlestein and the nature park center, the trail runs in sections together with the eco path Archeology Dörnberg . Then, crossing the Märchenlandweg , it reaches a little south past the Hangarstein ( 418.5  m ) and a little south past the Bühl (approx.  320  m ) leading eastwards to the Ahnataler district Weimar . There the stage ends at the Weimar stop (approx.  265  m ) on the Volkmarsen – Vellmar-Obervellmar railway line .

Stage 2 (Weimar → Mönchehof; 13.6 / 13.6 km):

From Weimar, the path first runs northwest towards the hangar stone, to pass it eastwards and then to cross under the Volkmarsen – Vellmar-Obervellmar railway line ; he leaves the Habichtswald nature reserve. Then it leads south past the (former) Calden zoo and north past the Kammerberg residential area belonging to the Ahnatal district of Heckershausen and after crossing the Rasenallee along the northern edge of the village. Beyond the local grill hut Oberer Tanzeplatz , it leads east around the Staufenberg ( 361.2  m ) and, after crossing a common section of the federal roads 7 and 83 in the area of ​​the municipality of Espenau, reaches the districts of Schäferberg (to Mönchehof) and Mönchehof , where it joins Shares part of the way with the Märchenlandweg . The stage ends there at Espenau train station (approx.  240  m ) on the Kassel – Warburg railway line .

Stage 3 (Mönchehof → Rothwesten; 12.8 / 10.1 km):

From Mönchehof, the path leads south-east, crossing the Kassel – Warburg railway line , to the northern edge of the Vellmar district of Frommershausen . From there it runs eastwards over the forestless hill of Breiter Stein ( 250.6  m ) and then north-eastwards, crossing the Espe at the Fuldataler Weidberg farm , to the Fuldataler district of Rothwesten , located on the Häusensberg ( 300.7  m ; with the Rothwesten public observatory ) , where the stage is ends in the center.

Stage 4 (Rothwesten → Landwehrhagen; 12.1 / 14.5 km):

After crossing the federal highway 3 , the path leads over the barrage over to the river loop peninsula, on which, off the path, lies Gut Kragenhof , which belongs to Kassel . From then on, it runs in the southern Lower Saxony district of Göttingen within the Münden Nature Park through the western foothills of the Kaufunger Forest , initially sharing a part of the path with the student path .

There it crosses the Halle – Kassel railway line and twice the small Fulda tributary Ickelsbach . In the narrow valley of the brook, between the Mühlenkopf and Mündener tunnels , it crosses the high-speed line Hanover – Kassel – Würzburg . Then it leads, in sections together with the Märchenlandweg, up to the Staufenberg district of Landwehrhagen . The stage ends in the town center at the town hall.

Stage 5 (Landwehrhagen → Heiligenrode; 11.5 / 11.0 km):

From the town hall in Landwehrhagen, the path leads first to the north, then to the east around the village and, leaving the Märchenlandweg and crossing the federal highway 7 , south to the Schanze on the Sandershäuser Berg ( 330.7  m ), where the battle of the Seven Years' War took place in 1758 Sandershäuser Berg took place. In doing so, he again reached the northern Hessian district of Kassel and switched from the Münden Nature Park to the Frau-Holle-Land Geo-Nature Park . Beyond the border, the trail runs down to the Niestetaler Gut Ellenbach ( 235  m ) and then further down into the valley of the Nieste tributary to the Fulda . Then he reaches the Niestetal district of Heiligenrode , through which the Märchenlandweg leads and where the stage ends in the center of the village.

Stage 6 (Heiligenrode → Oberkaufungen; 20.6 / 19.3 km):

From Heiligenrode, the trail runs north around the Mühlenberg ( 351.8  m ), and between this mountain and the Gerholdsberg east of it (approx.  355  m ; former location of Sensenstein Castle ; to the municipality of Nieste ) it goes through a little more South Lower Saxony leads. There and also in the former Germanic Garden of Windhausen Castle (approx. 260 to 300  m ; Gut Windhausen ; North Hesse), located on Diebachsgraben , which is then crossed, it divides the path in sections with the Eco Path Archeology Sensenstein and crosses it several times. Stage 7 (Oberkaufungen → Wellerode; 11.3 / 11.0 km):

> From Oberkaufungen the trail leads upwards a little bit in the village along the Losse and then crossing under the B 7 , up to the northern slopes of the Söhre ( Stiftswald Kaufungen ), and after crossing Setzebach and its tributary Ahlgraben, southwest over the Heupelsberg mountain spur ( 261.9  m ), in the direction of the Lohfelden district of Vollmarshausen . From there it runs southwards down to the Fahrenbach mentioned upper reaches of Wahle Bach located Söhrewalder district Wellerode where the stage at the village church ends.

Stage 8 (Wellerode → Dörnhagen; 14.3 / 14.3 km):

From Wellerode, after crossing the Fahrenbach, the trail runs north-west over the north-west slopes of the Söhre, circling the Warpel mountain ( 439.4  m ) north and then heading south along the A 7 . Then he passes Kiliansblick ( 301.5  m ) located between the autobahn and Landesstraße  3460 (formerly B 83 ). Then the trail runs in the forest of the Söhre, crossing the Fulda tributary Lochgraben (source stream of the Rummelsbach ), to the Fuldabrück district Dörnhagen , where it divides the path in sections with the Märchenlandweg and where it leaves the Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land.

Stage 9 (Dörnhagen → Großenritte; 16.0 / 16.0 km):

From Dörnhagen, after crossing the A 7 and the high-speed line Hanover – Kassel – Würzburg in the Dörnhagen tunnel, it leads roughly westwards into the valley of the Fulda , where it first crosses the Bebra – Baunatal-Guntershausen railway line at a level crossing and shortly thereafter passes under it (Fulda Bridge Guntershausen) . After crossing the Fulda, it runs along its tributary Bauna through the Baunatal district of Guntershausen , where it again crosses under the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Nordbahn . Here it divides the path with the Baunapfad , and the Eco path Kulturgeschichte Guntershausen crosses twice . The trail continues along the Bauna in a north-westerly direction after crossing under the federal motorway 49 through the Baunatal district of Kirchbauna , where it splits part of the way with the eco path Kulturgeschichte Hertingshausen and Kirchbauna . Then it turns south-south-west of the Volkswagen factory in Kassel (in Baunatal) to the west. Along the southern outskirts of Baunatal and the Bauna tributary Leisel (with the Leiselsee in the Leiselpark ) , it leads to the Baunatal district of Großenritte , located directly east of the Langenberge , where it re-enters the Habichtswald Nature Park . The stage ends there at the Großenritte station , through which the Hessencourrier , among others , travels on the Kassel – Naumburg railway line .

Stage 10 (Großenritte → Hoof; 12.5 / 12.4 km):

From Grossenritte, the trail runs westwards up to the Baunataler Burgberg ( 439.6  m ) in the Langenberg Mountains . Then it leads northwest along the northeast flank of the Langenberge, when crossing the Leisel and source streams of the Lützel and crossing the Ederseeweg in between , to the Schauenburg district of Hoof , which it reaches - running together with the Habichtswaldsteig. The stage ends there at Hoof station (again on the Kassel – Naumburg railway line ).

Stage 11 (Hoof → Brasselsberg; 12.0 / 12.4 km):

The path leads from Hoof to Kreuzen (level crossing) of the Kassel – Naumburg railway line, on the Schauenburg Castle Hill ( 499.9  m ), on which the remains of the Schauenburg ruins are located. Then it runs down to Hoof, where it crosses the railway line again in the Hoofer Pforte (level crossing) and crosses under it, first crosses the front and then the rear Bauna (source brooks of the Bauna ) and again crosses the Märchenlandweg and Baunapfad . Then the climb leads north-east up to the Hohe Habichtswald after crossing under the Bundesautobahn 44 and temporarily leaving the Habichtswaldsteig . There it runs, at least about 750 m southeast of Hohen Gras ( 614.7  m ), on which the path does not lead, around the elevations Kleiner ( 524.3  m ) and Großer Herbsthaus ( 509  m ) and reaches the forest restaurant Herbsthäuschen ( approx.  480  m ), where it meets the Habichtswaldsteig for the last time.

Then the trail crosses the Bauna tributary Firnsbach , first leading down a bit along the stream and then, with the Märchenlandweg, up to the Hirzstein ( 502  m ). Then it runs past the Teufelsmauer and after piercing the rock gate Porta Lapidaria , which is located near the Bilstein cliffs , to the Brasselsberg ( 434.2  m ), which rises with the Kassel Bismarck Tower to the west above the Kassel district of Brasselsberg . The stage then ends, running downhill, on Konrad-Adenauer- Strasse (approx.  330  m ) on the western outskirts of Brasselsberg; there the Ederseeweg crosses again .

Stage 12 (Brasselsberg → Herkules; 8.0 / 8.0 km):

From the outskirts of Brasselsberg the trail, crossing the Dönchebach , continues down to the high elevations of the Dönche , a nature reserve in Kassel. From a branch there ( 282.5  m ) it leads upwards, crossing the Drusel , to and a piece through the Druseltal . After leaving it, it passes in Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe , after crossing the Aschgraben the small mountain lake Asch on the west bank ( 430.5  m ) and arrives at Löwenburg (approx.  360  m ). Then it runs along with the Herkulesweg past the Steinhöfer waterfall to the lower end of the cascades (approx.  420  m ) of the Kassel water features . From there it takes the Herkulesweg and Studentenpfad up to the Herkules (approx.  515  m ), the start and destination point of the circular hiking trail, where the Kassel-Steig ends and meets the Märchenlandweg again.
