history
Barrows in the area indicate that the area was already populated in the Middle Bronze Age.
In the early Middle Ages it belonged to the Hessengau and was ecclesiastically subordinate to the Dietmelle dean's office. Landwehrhagen became part of Brunswick at the beginning of the 14th century . The place is mentioned for the first time as Lantgrebenhayn by Duke Ernst von Braunschweig-Lüneburg on January 16, 1356. Other mentions refer to the place as Landgrebenhain , in 1425 a plebann is mentioned in Landgrefenhain , while in 1491 Landgrebenhagen is given as the name. In the expression of the residents of Uschlags and Benterode , the term Zum Hauhen was used until the 19th century . A country road ran through Landwehrhagen, connecting Kassel with Hann. Münden connected. The seat of the higher court to which the village belonged was located at Sichelnstein Castle . Duke Wilhelm I pledged this court to the Hessian Landgrave Wilhelm I in 1482, before it came under the rule of the Guelphs again in 1535 .
The village was badly hit during the Thirty Years' War . During the Seven Years' War there were almost uninterrupted French troops in Landwehrhagen. Landwehrhagen has had one of the most important oak forests in the region since the earliest times , which provided the place with substantial income. In the 19th century, the amount of a tribe was given as 126 thalers .
After the place was partially destroyed by artillery fire by American troops in World War II , many displaced people found refuge here, which caused the population to skyrocket. In addition to the historic Evangelical Lutheran St. Petri Church , the Catholic St. Judas Thaddäus Church was therefore opened in 1967/68 as a subsidiary church of St. Elisabeth in Hann. Münden built.
On January 1, 1973, Landwehrhagen and seven other communities merged to form the large community of Staufenberg.
