Escherode is a village on the edge of the Kaufunger Forest belonging to the municipality of Staufenberg in the district of Göttingen in Lower Saxony .

history

Name and first documentary mention are connected to Asig (Esikonen) , as Charlemagne transferred in 813, as a reward for the services of his father Hiddi, Asic and Esiko, the area around Escherode as hereditary property. Esiko, who died around the year 823, was the founder of the village of Escherode, which was originally called Esekerode until 1353 . In the loan book of Duke Otto from 1318, the place is mentioned, whose name is given as Ecclesia in Echinroda in 1425 . In 1689 around 160 inhabitants lived here, mainly Brinksitzer and Kötner. Around 1900 there were around 300 residents here. At times the Lower Saxony Forest Research Institute had a station here. In 2010 the population was 961. In 2011 an area swap was carried out with Nieste .
