Spiekershausen is a place in southern Lower Saxony in the district of Göttingen and belongs to the municipality of Staufenberg .

Similar to the neighboring town of Speele, it is located in the lower Fulda valley in a Fulda loop northeast of Kassel . The small village can be reached by car via Kreisstraße 1 from Niestetal-Sandershausen. The Hessian long-distance cycle route R1 runs parallel to the K1 along the Fulda. The K1 runs through the entire village and leads over a serpentine route to Landwehrhagen. Furthermore, a small side road ("The Cave") leads to Landwehrhagen .

history

The place was first mentioned in documents in 1319. On May 27, 1500, Spiekershausen was the scene of the settlement of the disputes between the two princes Erich I of Braunschweig and Landgrave Wilhelm of Hesse . Elector Friedrich III. and Duke Johann von Sachsen acted as chairmen . In addition, many contracts were signed between the Guelphs and the House of Hesse , for example between Erich I and Landgrave Philipp the Magnanimous , as well as between Duke Heinrich the Younger and Landgrave Philipp. The last friendly meeting of the Catholic Heinrich the Younger and the Reformed Landgrave Philipp also took place in Spiekershausen. With the establishment of the Kingdom of Westphalia , the Lutheran church village was divided into the department of Fulda , which was located in the Kassel district. The responsible canton was that of Münden . Around 1813, around 104 people lived in the village, which consisted of 22 houses. In the middle of the 19th century Spiekershausen was part of the Kingdom of Hanover , which divided the village into the province of the Principality of Göttingen, while the authorities came from the Münden office, the Landdrostei Hildesheim formed the administrative district responsible for the village. The parish was taken care of by the neighboring town of Landwehrhagen. The village chapel was named Spiekershausen in the same year it was first mentioned. It was later expanded, has pointed arched windows and a small tower . There is a massive arch between the choir and nave , as well as a small niche in the eastern wall. The font dates from 1593 and shows the letters VEIH

From the end of the 1920s there is evidence of a ferry that carried vehicles across the Fulda. The ferry service existed until the mid-1960s. The first steamship, which was built on the Oberweser in 1843, completed its test drive on August 13th of that year on the Fulda from Kassel to Spiekershausen and back again.

On January 1, 1973, Spiekershausen was incorporated into the new community of Staufenberg.

Burial mound group

On the Hopfenberg, northeast between Spiekershausen and Landwehrhagen, there are 6 burial mounds scattered around the hilltop area. Further surveys in the immediate vicinity suggest that the total number of graves can be put at 17. In addition, between the forest areas, in the cleared areas, were destroyed by overacking. The diameter of the burial mounds vary between 4 m and 16 m, while their height is between 20 cm and 2 m. The hills are built up mainly from a stone block, which is covered with a mantle of earth and bordered by stone circles at the foot of the hill. Various graves were opened in the last century. In the Spiekershausen area one found, with bracelets, fragments of an arm spiral, grave goods from older Bronze Age women's burials , and remnants of Iron Age follow-up burials were recovered. Those investigations, around the middle of the 20th century, brought construction findings to light which suggest that these, as well as graves found in the neighboring North Hesse, can be dated to the time of the Southwest German Barrow Bronze Age.
