The Langenberg , popularly known as the Langenberg because of its several mountains that are quite far apart , is a good 22 km² and 556.7  m above sea level on the Schwengeberg NHN high low mountain range and natural area of the Habichtswälder mountain country in the district of Kassel and Schwalm-Eder district in northern Hesse .

The actual Langenberg , which justifies this name, is formed by the ridge, which stretches from the Saukopf to the south-southeast over Schwengeberg , Laufskopf , Bensberg and Bilstein to the Kammerberg and represents the eastern watershed of the Eder tributary Ems to Bauna and Pilgerbach . In the natural area of the same name, this ridge line is supplemented by the forestry that continues to the west and east or, in the south-east, by the adjoining, higher-lying parts of the landscape west of the Kassel basin .

geography

location

The Langenberg is located in the south of the Habichtswälder mountain country. Its northern part is in the Kassel district and the southern part ( Gudensberg Forest ) in the Schwalm-Eder district. In the Habichtswald Nature Park , both parts extend west to southwest of the town of Baunatal .

North-east of the Langenberge lies beyond the Hoofer Pforte with the ruins of the Schauenburg castle ( 499.9  m ) and the valley of the Bauna that adjoins it to the east , the Hohe Habichtswald . To the east the landscape drops over the urban area of Baunatal and along the lower course of the Bauna to the Fulda . To the south-east and south, the Langenberge slopes down via Gudensberg and Edermünde to the valley of the Eder , to the south-west to the valley of the Eder tributary Ems , while in north-westerly the Hinterhabichtswälder peaks connect seamlessly. Immediately to the east of it and still running in a north-westerly direction is the Habichtswälder depression , which clearly separates the peaks from the Hohe Habichtswald.

Natural allocation

The Langenberg forms the natural area Langenberg (342.02) in the main natural unit group West Hessisches Bergland (no.34), in the main unit Habichtswälder Bergland (342) and in the subunit Habichtswald (with Langenberg) (342.0 ).

history

The predominantly wooded Langenberge were inhabited a long time ago, as can be deduced from at least two old ring walls, one of which is on the Bilstein (west of Edermünde - Besse ) and the other on the Burgberg (west of Großenritte ).

Langenberg race

On the eastern flank of the in the mountains Long running head many were from 1965 until the late 1980s hillclimb held, which were received in the rating of the German Hillclimb Championship. As the well-known Langenberg race , they led on Landesstraße 3219 from the southwestern outskirts of Großenritte , starting at about 235  m above sea level and ending at the highest point on the road at around 410  m above sea level, on the top of the mountain landscape between Laufskopf and Bensberg at the hikers' car park Bensberg lies. For example, Johannes Breuer (Mercedes 190 E) from Kassel, who was the winner of Group A over 2000 cm³, took overall victory on October 5, 1986.

Wind farm

The wind farm planned in the Langenbergen is expected to consist of 5  wind turbines with a hub height of 140 to 150 m. The municipalities of Baunatal , Edermünde , Niedenstein and Gudensberg are involved in the inter-municipal project . The investments should be between 22.7 and 26.2 million euros. The project is to be connected to the grid in early 2015.

Traffic and walking

Sections of the state roads  3218 ( Metze - Besse ) in the south and 3219 ( Ermetheis - Großenritte ) in the central part lead through the Langenberge , with the last-mentioned road being part of the German Fairy Tale Road , as well as the hiking trails Brüder-Grimm-Weg , Ederseeweg , Habichtswaldsteig , Herkulesweg and Kassel-Steig ; The Baunapfad and Märchenlandweg run past to the north .
