The Ems is a 34 km long, western and left tributary of the Eder . It runs in the district of Kassel and in the Schwalm-Eder district in northern Hesse .

geography

course

The Ems rises in the Habichtswald Nature Park . One of its first tributaries is the Kotwelle brook, which rises on the eastern edge of Martinhagen , a district of Schauenburg , and flows approximately south-east to the Breitenbach district of Schauenburg ; Measured from its origin, the length of the river Ems is 34 km. Their actual source is only on the eastern edge of Breitenbach near Emserhof at around 370  m above sea level. NHN ; the creek that passes this courtyard is 1.7 km long according to the kilometers and comes from the Saukopf ( 511.4  m ). From the Emserhof to its mouth, the Ems is around 33.6 km long.

Initially, the Ems flows through Breitenbach, where, after passing the cemetery, the wave of manure coming from Martinhagen joins. Below Breitenbach, the river passes the former Ems mill and then flows in a slightly south-westerly direction, parallel to the Kassel – Naumburg railway line (on which the Hessencourrier operates), past old quarries. After the stream of Martinhagen flows into it, which is fed by the Molkenborn near the mouth, the Ems runs through the narrow breakthrough valley between the Remmenhausener Kopf ( 427.6  m ) in the north-west and the Falkenstein ( 461.9  m ) to the south-east with the Falkenstein castle ruins in the Southeast. Then they passed the deserted village Reimboldshausen and the far south-east of it on the mountain Altenburg ( 450.7  m ) located Altenburg .

Then it reaches Bad Emstal , where the Fischbach coming from the northwest flows into the district of Sand . Its mouth to the east rises along the river the Emser Berg ( 207.2  m ). After flowing through the Bad Emstal district of Merxhausen , it is spanned by the Kurfürstenbrücke, possibly built in 1756. Further downstream, the Stellbach coming from the west from Elbenberg , a district of Naumburg , and then the Wiehoff coming from Wichdorf , a district of Niedenstein , in the east flow into it . Then the Ems passes the former Weißenthalsmühle in the Buchlücke forest area , today an excursion restaurant with a campsite .

The Ems then reaches the Kirchberg district of Niedenstein , where it leaves the Habichtswald Nature Park and first the Matzoff stream coming from the east of the Metze district of Niedenstein and then that from the eastern flank of the Hinterberg ( 420.4  m ) between the Riede and Bad Emstal district the Sombach coming from the west flow into the Fritzlar district of Lohne . When leaving Kirchberg, it passes the Wartberg ( 306  m ), the main place where the Neolithic Wartberg culture was found . Not far south of Mount opens the approaching flowing from wages in the west and fed by the Bruchbach Romme Born, and immediately thereafter, the Ems between Lohne and passes under Gudensberger district equals the state road  3218. About 400 meters further south ends of the eastern part of coming from peers Rosenbach the Ems. Shortly before its mouth, a mill ditch branches off from this to the south, which accompanies the Ems on its eastern side past the Leichenkopf ( 265  m ) to the west and, after about 500 m at its western foot, feeds the Gleichener Mühle, only about 50 m east of the Ems .

While the Ems continues to meander in a generally southerly direction to the Gudensberg district of Dorla , the Mühlengraben on the southern edge of the Leichenkopf takes in water again from the Ems immediately adjacent at this point and then swings around the southern edge of the Leichenkopf (at the now deserted March mill) East. After another 350 m it turns south again to flow directly north of Dorla into the creek In der Hohle coming from the east of the Weißenborn spring near the old mill, which is now also desolate . The latter flows into the Ems immediately after passing the Bickmühle on the north-western outskirts of Dorla.

The Ems then runs for a length of about 750 m to the southwest, where it passes the Wehren mill, which is located southeast of the Fritzlar district of Wehren , which is a little further away from the river . Then it makes a left bend around the Mühlenberg ( 207.2  m ) to flow further east. It crosses under the federal motorway 49 and then flows past the northern outskirts of the Fritzlar district of Werkel , after which it flows past the Hille-Mühle and the Neue Mühle after the Dorler Bach flows into it on the left. The Ems then passes the Gudensberg district of Obervorschütz and the Felsberg district of Niedervorschütz and absorbs the water from the Goldbach coming from the Gudensberg district of Maden in the northwest .

Finally, the Ems flows through the Felsberg district of Böddiger and passes the Böddiger Berg, the northernmost vineyard in Hesse. A few kilometers further on , after crossing the Ederauenweg , the Ems flows from the west at around 150  m above sea level into the Fulda tributary Eder flowing in from the south .

Natural allocation

The Ems rises in the main natural unit group West Hessian mountain and sink country (No. 34), in the main unit Habichtswälder Bergland (342) and in the subunit Habichtswälder Senke (342.1) in the natural area Breitenbacher Mulde (342.10). Then it flows through the southern part of the subunit Hinterhabichtswälder Kuppen (342.2) and through the natural area Sander Kammer (341.43) belonging to the subunit Naumburg Lower and Ridge (341.4 ). Watershed

The headwaters of the Ems are located near the watershed between Diemel and Eder, part of the Diemel-Eder / Fulda / Weser watershed . The water of the Ems, which flows mainly in a south-easterly direction, runs through the Eder and Fulda into the Weser , while that of the warm water, which arises on the other side of the plateau around Martinhagen, flows in mostly northerly directions through the Diemel into the Weser.

history

In 1688 the fish wealth of the Ems was discovered by Matthäus Merian the Elder. Ä. Described in the "Tropographia Germaniae": " This ampt is in the middle of the strong river Embs, which heals a very stately fish water and extends to the Habichtswalde. "
