Bad Emstal is a municipality in the Kassel district in Hesse .

Geographical location
Bad Emstal is located about 20 km southwest of Kassel in the southern part of the Habichtswald Nature Park in the Ems valley .
Neighboring communities
Bad Emstal borders the city of Wolfhagen in the north, the community of Schauenburg (both in the Kassel district) and the city of Niedenstein in the east, the city of Fritzlar in the south (both in the Schwalm-Eder district ) and the city of Naumburg in the west (District of Kassel).

history
As numerous archaeological finds show, the area of today's municipality of Bad Emstal was continuously inhabited since the 2nd century BC. The first settlers were chatting . The area of the Fritzlar - Waberner level and the Kassel basin is considered to be the heartland of the Chatti and Batavians . The first written mention of Balhorn comes from the year 774.
In 1976 a thermal spring was drilled in sand and the expansion into a thermal bath began. In 1992 the municipality of Emstal was given the name Bad .
Incorporations
On January 1, 1967, the new municipality of Emstal was created through the merger of the previously independent municipalities of Merxhausen (Mayor Günter Werner) and Sand (Mayor Willi Heinemann). Balhorn and Riede were added on December 31, 1971.

mayor
The non-party Ralf Pfeiffer, who was supported by the CDU and the FWG, was mayor for twelve years. He was first elected in 2006 and re-elected in 2012. On March 18, 2018, Stefan Frankfurth (SPD) was elected as the new mayor of Bad Emstal.

The municipality of Bruck an der Großglocknerstraße has been a partner municipality of the Bad Emstal municipality since 1973. The partnership was terminated after a newspaper report in 2018 by the municipality of Bruck, but both municipalities continue to refer to each other on their websites as partner municipality.
Worth seeing
The Hessencourrier trains run through Bad Emstal . In the district of Riede is the Riede Castle with its landscape park. The Falkenstein castle ruins are located on the Falkenstein mountain near the “Sand” part of the municipality . The monastery museum has been housed in the estate next to the Merxhausen monastery since 2004. It is right on the eco-path for peace education.
