The Hessencourrier is a non-profit association founded in Kassel in 1972 with the purpose of collecting railway vehicles and putting them into operation. The name Hessencourrier was chosen because a large part of the vehicles comes from Hessian railway lines. The collection includes steam and diesel locomotives as well as passenger and freight cars. Since 1992, the association has been operating a museum railway on the section from Großenritte to Naumburg (Hesse) .

The depot is located in Kassel on Johanna-Waescher-Straße in the Marbachshöhe Technology Park and was built in sections on the club's own property from 2005 to 2012.

The historic train runs on the 33.4 km long Kassel – Naumburg line of the former Kassel-Naumburg Railway from the depot south of the Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe station via Baunatal through the southern part of the Habichtswald Nature Park , then via Schauenburg and Bad Emstal to Naumburg (Hesse) where the other terminus is located. The timetable includes around twelve public trips a year plus any charter trips.

The Hessencourrier cycle path with a length of around 42 km and the Habichtswald-Steig, a hiking trail, run alongside the route .
