Sand is the health resort and capital of the Bad Emstal community in the Kassel district , Hesse , where the local government is based.
location
Sand lies in the southern foothills of the Habichtswald Nature Park and is traversed by the Ems and its tributary Fischbach . The village, which is almost completely surrounded by wooded mountains except for the southern exit of the valley, is located on the foothills of the mountains Erzeberg and Emser Berg , which belong to the natural area of the Hinterhabichtswälder peaks . The federal highway 450 runs to the west of the village and the federal highway 3220 to the east .
history
In the area of today's village of Sand there were a number of settlements in the Middle Ages, the names of which are mentioned in the interest register of the St. Petri monastery in Fritzlar in 1209 , a. a. the settlements "Mutzlar", "Offenhusen" and "Visbach". Mutzlar, which was presumably founded in the 8th century, was mentioned under the name "Moteslari" in 1074 in documents from Hasungen Monastery , making it the oldest documented settlement in the area of the present-day town.
During the late Middle Ages, settlement efforts were concentrated on just one village, which was mentioned as "tzum Sande Mutzlar" in documents from the Breitenau monastery in 1354 , while the other settlements fell into desolation. Some of their names have been preserved in field names to this day (Hof Offenhausen).
In 1448 the von Dalwigk ceded the village, which was then only called “sand”, to the Hessian landgraves . In 1732, Sand received the brewing license, and a brewery was opened in 1738. The brewery was closed in 1905, street names such as "Am Hopfenberg" and "Braugasse" still bear witness to this trade today.
In 1904, sand was opened up by the newly built Kassel-Naumburg railway line of the Kassel-Naumburg railway , and this initiated an economic boom in the town. At the end of the 1960s, the image of the town center was significantly changed as part of a village renewal. The demolition of numerous half-timbered houses and farms used for agriculture created space for the expansion and straightening of the main roads and for the construction of new public buildings (including the post office and town hall).
In 1976 thermal water was successfully drilled and the first temporary thermal bath was built . In 1979 the new building of the spa center was put into operation. The municipality of Emstal has had the addition of Bad since 1992 .

The Protestant church in Sand was built around 1510, and it is mentioned in a document as "Capella zum Sande" in 1519. The tower substructure from around 1510 has a new superstructure. In 1779 the chapel was torn down down to the lower third of the tower and a much larger nave was built. In 1910 the church was rebuilt and expanded. The organ was manufactured in 1970 as a new building and a single manual instrument with ten registers; in 2002 a second manual and six additional registers were added. In the choir of the church there is a window with stained glass from 1910.
The church patronage was owned by the Merxhausen Monastery until the Reformation ; from 1526 it was held by the Landgraviate of Hesse .
Sand is one of the main places of the Protestant Althessian Church .
Spa facilities
In 1976, a fluoride-containing calcium-sodium-sulphate-chloride thermal water was developed in a 800 meter deep borehole in Sand. A bath that had initially been set up was replaced in the late 1970s by a new thermal bath with an exercise pool with indoor and outdoor areas. A herb garden and the spa park promenade are connected to the thermal baths, which at its northern end merge into the "Rose Garden Art and Culture", in which sculptures by regional artists are exhibited. The place is officially recognized as a spa and climatic health resort .
Economy and Infrastructure
The largest employers in the area are two resident mechanical engineering companies with a total of over 200 employees. Further jobs exist u. a. in retail, in geriatric care and in local hotels and restaurants. Sand performs the functions of a sub-center for the surrounding villages and offers the appropriate conditions with shops, pharmacy, doctor's offices, etc.
In Sand there is a cooperative comprehensive school with elementary level (Christine Brückner School) and two kindergartens.
Sports facilities in place with the sports field facility "Auf der Höhe", a sports hall, outdoor pool, riding hall, indoor tennis center and courts, fitness course in the spa park, Nordic walking routes and numerous circular hiking trails. The village lies on the (long-distance) hiking trails Herkulesweg , Ederseeweg and the Märchenlandweg .

Attractions
- On the northern outskirts of the village is the Sand station (Kr Kassel) on the Kassel – Naumburg railway line , on whose route the Hessencourrier Association now operates a regular museum railway .
- The Falkenstein castle ruins and the Altenburg castle are near the village .
- A historic hiking trail leads along the Ems, with images and explanatory texts on buildings and places rich in history at several stations.
