history

Wichdorf was first mentioned in a document in 957 as Uuihdorpf . The place name , which has not fundamentally changed since then, appears in historical sources in many slightly changing variations, depending on the gusto of the clerk.

After the "Wackermaul", which died out in 1345, the " Hess von Wichdorf ", who are related to them, were the dominant landowners of the village until 1631 .

On December 31, 1971 Wichdorf was incorporated into the city of Niedenstein.

Evangelical village church

The Evangelical Church is a simple hall building from 1751 to 1754 with an adjusted tower. It was expanded in 1907 and completely redesigned. Noteworthy are the stone epitaph of Rittmeister Daniel Wilhelm Hess von Wichdorf and his wife Maria von Harenberg, who died in 1584, as well as the tombstone of Maria Wolff von Gudenberg, who was killed by lightning strike in 1576 by the Kassel sculptor Andreas Herber .

Today's church had at least two previous buildings, although it is unclear which of these was reused in today's building. A pleban documented in 1234 and a vicepleban documented in 1319 as well as several grave monuments from the 16th century refer to the earliest building from the 13th century. These were reused in the second building in the 1660s, which was probably built after the destruction of the Thirty Years' War mentioned for 1627 and 1631 and contained a Baroque pulpit with Renaissance shapes and stalls dated 1661. Two grave monuments from 1576 and 1584 were incorporated into the new building; A grave slab of the Teutonic Knight Ewald von Hertingshausen , who died in 1571 and was depicted in armor , was reused as an altar plate after the raised parts of the depiction had been removed . Other grave monuments were smashed and used as flooring. In today's third building, the tower of the previous building was taken over as well as three building inscriptions and the first two grave monuments from the 16th century. The altar with the tombstone from 1571 was removed when the church was rebuilt in 1907, and the whereabouts of the tombstone is unknown. The stalls, the pulpit and a (presumably U-shaped circumferential gallery), which are documented in a photo taken before the renovation in 1907, are just as difficult to find today.
