geography

location

The Great Bear Mountain rises to the north of the Hinterhabichtswälder peaks in the Habichtswald Nature Park . Its summit is 16.5 kilometers (km; in each case as the crow flies ) northwest of downtown Kassel . In the hawk forest sink with flowing northward Diemel influx Warm only 2.9 km northeast of the mountain summit, the core city of Zierenberg and - in each case to the municipality Habichtswald belonging - 4.3 km southeast Ehlen and 5.4 km east-southeast Dörnberg . 3.2 km south-southeast of the summit on the eastern flank of the Burghasunger Berg, part of the Hinterhabichtswälder Kuppen, the Zierenberg district of Burghasungen . 2.9 km southwest of the summit is Wenigenhasungen , 2.8 km southwest Altenhasungen in the valley of the Twiste tributary Erpe , 4 km west at the source of the Erpe tributary Dase Nothfelden , all of which belong to Wolfhagen. 3.4 km to the north-west lies the Oberelsungen district of Zierenberg on the Dase . Most of the Bärenberg belongs to the urban area of Zierenberg and its south and south-west flanks to that of Wolfhagen .

The other three main heights of the Habichtswald are 5.5 km to the east ( Hoher Dörnberg , 578.7  m , Dörnberg and Schreckenberge ), 7.8 km to the south-east ( Hohes Gras , 614.8  m , Hoher Habichtswald ) and 12.6 km South-southeast ( Schwengeberg , 556.7  m , Langenberge ) distance.

Natural allocation

The Große Bärenberg belongs to the natural spatial main unit group West Hessian mountain and sink country (No. 34) and in the main unit Habichtswälder Bergland (342) to the subunit Hinterhabichtswälder Kuppen (342.2). To the north the landscape leads to the Great and Small Gudenberg with the northern end of the Hinterhabichtswälder peaks. On the north and east flanks of the mountain massif, the border to the natural area Zierenberger Grund (342.11) runs roughly along the federal motorway 44 , which, with the warmth flowing there, belongs to the subunit Habichtswälder Basin (342.1). In the south, the Hinterhabichtswälder peaks continue over the Rohrberg. To the southwest, the landscape falls into the Altenhasunger Graben (341.33) natural area with the Erpe and to the west to northwest into the Elsunger Senke natural area (341.32) with the Dase, both of which belong to the Wolfhager Hügelland subunit (341.3).

Mountain height, peaks and neighboring peaks

The Große Bärenberg is 600.7  m high, which can be seen on maps showing an altitude around 50 to 60 meters (m) northwest of the Bärenberg tower. There is a trigonometric point ( 598.7  m ) about 80 m north-northwest of the tower .

For Bear Mountain range also includes the 1.6 km north of the main summit location Large Gudenberg ( 568.7  m ) to the castle ruins Big Gudenberg , and 1.9 km north-northeast located Small Gudenberg ( 531.8  m ) to the castle ruins Small Gudenberg and the hilly Rohrberg ( 516.7  m ), which is 1.3 km south-southeast on Wolfhagener district. The Burghasunger Berg ( 479.7  m ) is 3.3 km south and the Wattenberg ( 516.2  m ) is 6.2 km south .

Flowing waters

The Bärenberg massif is about 3 km away from the summit, east of the Diemel tributary Warm , southwest of the Twiste tributary Erpe and northwest of the Erpe tributary Dase . These rivers are fed by various short streams that come from the slopes of the mountain, among other things. The mountain range represents part of the watershed between the Twiste in the west and the Warme in the east. The water from all these flowing waters ultimately flows towards the Weser tributary Diemel, which is 15 km north, approximately in a west-east direction .

Protected areas

The Hute vor dem Bärenberg nature reserve is located on the western flank of the Großer Bärenberg ( CDDA no. 163835; designated in 1990; 33.6  hectares in size). This in turn belongs to the multi-part fauna-flora-habitat area forests near Zierenberg (FFH no. 4621-306; 1513.78 km²), two further parts of which are on the Rohrberg, the south-south-eastern branch of the Great Bear Mountain.

Earlier were on the mountain parts of the resolution in March 2008 Nature Preserve Nature Park Habichtswald (CDDA No. 329167;. 1968), does not match the Habichtswald Nature Park should be confused and about the areas of all localities and located in this natural park their peripheral areas smaller than the Park was.

Bear Mountain Tower

Lookout tower (until 1999)

On the top of the Großer Bärenberg, a few meters east-southeast of its summit, there is the Bärenberg tower ( ), an observation tower with a transmitter :

New Bärenberg tower with viewing platform and transmitter systems

As early as the early 1970s, a 30 m high observation tower was built on the Großer Bärenberg , from which one could initially see over the treetops and on which antennas were later installed. Its square structure began to rust and eventually the tower was demolished.

About 60 m south-east of the highest point of the Großer Bärenberg, the new 54.78 m high Bärenberg tower, a modern observation tower with a transmitter (see below ), was completed as a steel framework construction. It stands a little below the 600 m height line .

From its observation platform (with wooden floor) located at a height of 29 m , there is a comprehensive panoramic view in good visibility . Then, in a clockwise direction, among other things, these targets can be recognized - with distance in kilometers (km) (as the crow flies ) and altitude in meters (m) above sea level:

Transmitter

The transmitter on the Bärnbergturm was during its construction in 1999 for broadcasting of Packet Radio installed on 53 m height with eight directional antennas on the antenna platform to 43.5 m in height and two circular lamps.

Cyril

On January 18 and 19, 2007, hurricane Kyrill passed through Germany, among other places, and left a lot of damage, especially in the previously densely forested hilltop area of the Großer Bärenberg. While the trees there were almost completely destroyed, the tower and antennas were not damaged.

Chat stones

On the eastern flank of the Bärenberg massif - below the motorway or above Zierenberg - there are the Chattensteine (also called shadow stones ), a basalt rock formation designated as a natural monument , on the forestless part of the mountain slope in the area of the 340 m contour line . There was presumably a place of worship of the Germanic people of Chatten , who for example settled in what is now northern Hesse; the name Chatten later became Hessen . Immediately to the northeast of it is a transmission tower .

Desolation

Also on the east flank of the bear mountain range - below the highway - are on the mountainside three deserted villages : something northwest of Zierenberg the deserted village Geriksen , west of the town, the deserted village Hilboldsen and northeast of its Südausläufers Rohrberg ( 516.7  m ) or above the Good Bodenhausen the deserted village Rohrbach .

Transport links and hiking

On the eastern flank of the Bärenberg massif, the federal motorway 44 runs between the junctions Breuna in the northwest and Zierenberg in the south-southeast , from whose exits several state roads connect the villages around the massif. In some places side roads branch off from these roads to parking lots on the mountain, from which you can hike on forest paths, often leading up steeply, for example to the Bärenberg tower or to the two Gudenberg mountains. A section of the Studentenpfad hiking trail leads across the southern flank of the Großer Bärenberg in an east-west direction between the villages of Dörnberg and Altenhasungen . The byway of stages 27 to 29 of the Märchenlandweg runs across the lower part of the eastern flank of the massif - below the motorway . The Zierenberg – Oberelsungen – Altenhasungen section of the Volkmarsen – Vellmar-Obervellmar railway runs north around the massif .
