geography

location

The Hirzstein is located in the east of the Habichtswald Nature Park on a wooded area in the southwest of the southwest Kassel district of Brasselsberg ; However, it rises north above Elgershausen , east of Hoof and southeast of the former mining settlement Firnsbachtal, each of which belongs to the community of Schauenburg .

In the north-west, north, north-east and east direction the landscape leads over into the actual Hohen Habichtswald and to the south and south-west it descends into the valley of the Bauna in the municipality of Schauenburg . Its northern tributary Firnsbach flows roughly in a north-south direction west of the mountain.

On the Hirzstein lies the 0.27 km² large nature reserve Hirzstein , which has existed since 1979 , to which its summit and the nearby Teufelsmauer belong. There are also ring walls near the peaks , which are designated as cultural monuments . To the south, a little below the summit, there is a former basalt quarry with steep rock faces.

Natural allocation

The Hirzstein belongs to the natural spatial main unit group West Hessian mountain and sink country (No. 34) and in the main unit Habichtswälder Bergland (342) to the natural area High Habichtswald (342.00). To the south the landscape drops into the natural area Hoofer Pforte (342.01).

Hirzstein lookout point

Somewhat south-southwest of the Hirzstein summit, above the steep and high rock faces of the former basalt quarry, the Hirzstein viewpoint ( ) is located at 474.8  m above sea level. From there the view falls to the Langenberge , parts of Baunatal (e.g. Großenritte ) and Schauenburg ( Elgershausen and Hoof ) with the Burgberg there , in the southern distance beyond the Odenberg the Knüllgebirge can be seen. The Hirzstein telescope stake is on site : 22 pipes are attached to the stake, pointing to the viewpoint's visual targets. The destination (mostly mountain, elevation or town) is engraved on each tube with name and distance.

Devil's wall

About 450 m northeast of the Hirzsteingipfels located near the small hut Teufelseck , the next one on 467.6  m forest road intersection located height is, the basalt - transition Teufelsmauer . This is part of a small, former quarry in which Habichtswalder basalt tuff was quarried for the construction of Hercules in the 18th century , whereby the naturally formed wall was exposed.

The wall is about 30 m long, about 8 to 10 m high and almost 90 cm thick. It arose when rising, glowing magma did not reach the surface of the earth and poured sideways into a softer sedimentary rock - the Habichtswalder basalt tuff - and gradually cooled down. Because of its special nature, it was designated as a natural monument and thus placed under nature protection .

Directions and hiking

The federal motorway 44 leads south past the Hirzstein . From the Kassel- Bad Wilhelmshöhe junction, which is about 2 km southeast of the mountain, you can first drive on state road  3215 (former federal road 520 ), then on district road  22 and finally on side roads through Elgershausen, to parking lots south (near the former quarry) and to the northwest (in the Firnsbachtal area ) below the mountain.

To the southeast, far below the Hirzsteingipfel, the Ederseeweg leads past the south parking lot and the Habichtswaldsteig through the Firnsbachtal to the northwest of its hilltop . The Kassel-Steig that passes the Teufelsmauer runs over the mountain . From the north-west parking lot , a path leads uphill - partly together with the Kassel-Steig - to the Teufelseck refuge near the wall , to ultimately run as a branch path over the summit and end shortly afterwards at the Hirzstein viewpoint . From the Teufelsmauer in turn a path runs - partly in the upper Firnsbach valley and there past the Herbsthäuschen restaurant - to the Hohen Gras , and in the opposite direction it leads from the wall through the Porta Lapidaria to the Brasselsberg .
